A lot depends on what time frame you want the vehicle to represent. The use of the white stars should have ended with the era of camouflage vehicles.

I would agree, that it was probably repainted with the forest green when it went through the depot rebuild in 73' and with all the changes happening around that time period on color and markings with going subdued it makes sense what you have found. I agree with you that it will look it's best...
