    CUCV 1986 M1008 - In a Real Pickle - Bad Heads - Need Advice

Yeah I figured out what you were trying to say later, just didn't know what you meant at that moment. I knew you weren't saying the heads were 3 ft lbs, but rather was asking what were you referring to without typing out the whole question. So are you saying that you did find that there was...

    CUCV 1986 M1008 - In a Real Pickle - Bad Heads - Need Advice

I don't blame you one bit for wanting to work on the motor in a comfortable position. Like they always say "work smarter not harder"... I always seem to do the opposite of that though... And Yes, it would have been better to pull the motor. But I just don't have a much $ right now, so I was...

    CUCV 1986 M1008 - In a Real Pickle - Bad Heads - Need Advice

Yeah, at this point, I wish I had just went ahead and pulled the engine. If I had a cherry picker I probably would have pulled it, but I could still have done it with a come-along and then rolled the truck out from underneath it back outside. Oh well now...

    CUCV 1986 M1008 - In a Real Pickle - Bad Heads - Need Advice

I might just take your suggestion Rich, that would be better than trying to bend over the fenders. We did get the driver side head sit in place, so I may not do that side. And yes the booster is a pain to work around, but I really didn't want to take all that off. Will be checking all mounts...

    CUCV 1986 M1008 - In a Real Pickle - Bad Heads - Need Advice

 I can't believe I didn't even think about the motor mounts... That could definitely be the issue. Thank You for pointing that out Cucvrus. As far as noise, no hadn't heard any knocking chattering or anything that you would expect with bad mounts. I also had not seen any "extra" movement...

    CUCV 1986 M1008 - In a Real Pickle - Bad Heads - Need Advice

Yeah, oreily is supposed to have me another gasket in the morning, at least better than 3 days from amazon. Just a 60 mile round trip... I was using one old bolt with the head cut off and slot cut in it, as an "alignment guide pin". I had two of them, but I could only use one in the front...

GM torque spec that I found on another site: Cylinder Head (3 steps) 20 / 50 / +90 degrees......

But how are they evenly tightened if they are not the same torque spec? 3ft lbs? Yeah I know you can't reuse tty head bolts. I have two sets of all new fel-pro head bolts. Getting ready to install the heads today, which is why I'm pondering the torque specs.

    86' M1008 - Contemplating Chevy 350 engine swap

Ok... this might be a dumb question... but why on earth does the TM list the head bolts ("cap screws") torque specs at: 1st round 20lbs - 2nd round 50lbs - 3rd round 1/4 Turn! What??!! I've never seen a head bolt that wasn't specifically torqued to a predetermined spec. "1/4...

    86' M1008 - Contemplating Chevy 350 engine swap

Thanks for the info Ken [thumbzup] I don't have any gauges yet, but I have been looking at some. I plan on adding at least oil pressure and water temp, as I have always been weary of just the idiot lights ever since we got this truck. I should have added them back then, but no time like the...

    86' M1008 - Contemplating Chevy 350 engine swap

Appreciate the advice Rusty [thumbzup]. And Yes I have the Fel-Pro Perma-Torque head gaskets, so I won't use it on them then.

    86' M1008 - Contemplating Chevy 350 engine swap

Is there a good location on the engine to add a oil pressure sending unit and temperature sending unit, in order to add Actual Gauges inside the cab instead of just relying on the idiot lights??

    86' M1008 - Contemplating Chevy 350 engine swap

Ok, well I did find out the ACDelco 12TP5D is a "high flow" t-stat, that is verses the OE. I got it in already, still might do some more research into the MR Gasket you listed. Yeah, I'll try the headbolt "trick", seems like it would help.

    86' M1008 - Contemplating Chevy 350 engine swap

Thanks for the info Ken [thumbzup] I'm looking into this. I thought the AC Delco 12TP5D that I just got in was supposed to be a "High Flow" design, as there was two different models listed. But now going back, I can't find where it said that.... So a different one might be better. However I...

    86' M1008 - Contemplating Chevy 350 engine swap

Couple more questions: What is the general thought line on using Copper Spray-A-Gasket Hi-Temp Adhesive Sealant?? Especially since I'm not having the block resurfaced? I'm going to clean the block surface very carefully with Shop 3M Roloc Discs. After of course stuffing rags down into all the...

    86' M1008 - Contemplating Chevy 350 engine swap

Yep Totally Agree Ken! I already ordered two sets of new Fel-pro head bolts when I ordered all the gaskets the other day. I don't want to take the chance. And Yes, I also just ordered a AC-delco 180 degree thermostat to replace the original 195 too. Wouldn't mind to have had the ARP studs...
