Yeah my old box did not have the afterglow circuit but whatever as long as it works and my setup starts down to 10 degrees instantly so no complaints.
The KDS yellow label is supposedly the best out there but I have two spare boxes (used but good) so I'm all set for a while.

Yes, the engine temp during these maneuvers is critical to help diagnose the problem. What rpm is your engine idling? Was the fan on when this would happen?
You said you reused an old fuel filter. Tell us a little more about that. There are so many knowledgeable experienced guys here to help...
As stated the busted tip will fall into the pre-cup and shouldn't make it into the cylinder. If the tip breaks off the military just replace the glow plug and don't bother going after the busted tips. I have had a few busted tips and went after them. One great tip I got on this site was to stuff...
I'm sure most of the valves are frozen as well as the piston rings. Be cheaper to replace the whole motor with a good used one over rebuilding what you have. Damn shame.

Great motor but don't forget the 4-53T Silver.
The 53 series were a little noisy motor but a great two stroke with a turbo. Many 53s were used in bread trucks. They spin a little less than the 4BT and the 4BT motor has much more capabilities than the 53 series.

There was also a 292 Stove Bolt and that made great power. I remember offenhauser had an intake so you could use a Holley 4bbl which was really cool. Very tough motors those old Stove Bolts.

These are rough numbers but good for this discussion.
A 12V 100A alternator uses about 4HP so from that.
100A Alt @24v=2400W
200A Alt@24v=5800W
400A Alt@24v=9600W
A 24v Alt requires 8hp for every 100A.
That big 400A Alt will suck up 36HP to run under full load.
A 400A Alt will put a...
Hook a volt meter to one of the glow plugs and rotate the start lever from off to run and see is you get any voltage to the plugs. That would be my first step.
