I do just so happen to have the M939 series -10 operator's manual, from when I was really considering getting one as literally my first car. (I still may do just that!). People really laughed at me when it first showed up.
I love the window A/C unit idea but isn't that interfering with the already-equivilent-to-a-cinderblock aerodynamics of the truck?
For me, 67MPH in a stock M939A2 is going to be plenty, the highest speed limit in the places I'll be is 65 anyway.
This is part of why I've considered the M37; it'll actually fit in parking garages, drive-thrus at the bank or fast food places, easier to handle in shopping center parking lots, and fit in a single car garage!
It'll be awhile but when I get myself an MV, be it an M37, M35A2, M939 series or 809...
This is so true! It definitely pays to have other MV owning friends. Especially when you're a newbie/idiot like I happen to be, having others as mentors can be really handy!
Wow, where did they live? For whatever reason everybody seems to be connected to Fairbanks area! Yeah, if the brakes go out they can do a LOT of damage. Yeah, I'd definitely need a CDL for the M939 series here. Yeah, the cabs are definitely pretty drafty!
As for the block heater, at one...
TobyS, have you spent a lot of time in Alaska then? It's crazy how many people are connected to AK. My roommate here and I actually met because of Steel Soldiers. (look at my forum threads, the story is in there, you'd get a kick out of it). I haven't gotten far enough as to get insurance...
Good to know these don't like brief drives! 30-ish minute drives should cut it though right? I'm talking some residential streets possibly, then 55MPH hammer down on the freeway for a few miles, then some city driving, then that's it.
Has anyone ever later put an ether start system into an M939? Or, for that matter, an 8.3 into an 809 series? I'd be curious to hear if the latter has ever been attempted, successfully that is.
Yeah, I'd only be getting one if I lived off campus, which I ideally will be by next semester. I know they're physically huge, heavy, older, loud, rough riding, creature-comfort-lacking trucks, but that's why I love them! I can't say why but I think most people know what I mean!
Any other input?
Yeah, anybody got any comparison photos of one next to a Deuce? I'd be curious to see those.
Yeah, I'd be doing all sorts of different driving with mine. Jamming gears on our never-got-finished freeways here that stop at traffic lights, dry/maintained dirt/gravel roads, (Once you get out of...
The 250 Cummins being challenging to start is good to know for Fairbanks, AK, but everyone here has block heaters...I mean every car has the male end of an extension cord dangling out of the front bumper. By comparison, how is the 8.3 Cummins in a M939A2?
Thanks for the replies guys! I was anticipating the low fuel mileage and the gross weight makes sense...but how does that go if I'm not loading the thing fully? Would that get around a CDL requirement? If not I would just wait to get a CDL and go get an M923A2 or something like that. Probably...
Latest ridiculous idea:
So not long ago I was reading that the 809 series 5 ton trucks (predecessor to the M939s we all know and love) have air-over-hydraulic brakes like a Deuce does. It's thus my understanding that in my current state (Alaska, for those of you who really want to know) I...
