Drop the winch driveshaft and try to turn each end without the shaft in place. If they both spin freely, you probably have an issue with "load" on the gears.
Yep, it's leaching up the threads!
Sounds like the easiest fix is thread sealant. Take one at a time out, seal it, and re-install and re-torque. Make sure it cures up well before firing her up.

I acquired a significant amount of spare parts from a M.V. hobbyist who left the hobby. I have lots of gasket sets, axle seals, etc. that are still sealed in their brown paper packages marked with the NSN number and a brief description. Most parts should be for 2 1/2 and 5 ton...
According to my research, here is a picture of NZ Army riders, in France, riding Indian 741B motorcycles. Maybe one if these is actually my bike :wink:

This 1941 Indian was quite the project. I found it, completely civilianzed and in pretty poor shape (ran when parked???). The guy I bought it from said his dead business partner brought it back from New Zealand. I did a serial number search and the bike's serial number...

Here is my 1941 Indian 741-B. Used by New Zealand Military during WWII. Brought back from NZ and civilianized. I bought it and restored it to military specs.
I recently acquired a rebuilt one "sealed in the container" and paid way more then expected. I could have bought a complete truck. None the less, it's what I wanted to do.
