That looks like a good project, David. It's funkylooking, but I like it. Keep us posted on your progress. I guess we need to add an Iltis category to the forums.
Superdave, that is a beautiful restoration. It looks like you have plenty of parts trucks on hand to help David out with his...
Looking good John. How do you like the ECV front clip? What about the LED headlights? I am planning on LED's all the way around on mine too. I also like the look and benefits of the 24-bolt rims. Do you have your CTIS working?
+1 for John Bizal at Midwest Military. Super nice guy with tons of first hand restoration experience. Lots of NOS and reproduction parts. My brother got a bunch of stuff from Sid Beck before he passed. He was a super guy. RIP Sid.
Oh yeah, that t-case would make more sense with the 2wd option.
The Covington Pike bottoms are a blast! I forgot all about that place. There are some nasty, swampy holes in that place. My wife and I had to rescue some poor schmuck from out of town who took his brand new stock Tahoe there...
Nice job! I would love to see some more close up pics sometime. I always thought it would be a blast to do a conversion like that ever since seeing PPE's HMMWV in an issue of Diesel Power. Any hub issues after your donut session or 120 mph street runs? Which t-case are you running? NP242HD?
All I have to say is Amen! I am very glad you guys made it home safely. It's hard to believe that truck went from a pile of parts to a truck that could make a 2400 mile trip without too many problems. That was definitely a good shake down run! I can't wait to see all of the great things you...
It's been a pretty crazy day for David and his co-driver. I am going to try to get the details right, but I'm sure I'll miss something since we talked mostly through text messages. The guys were somewhere in east TX when the truck seemed to lose power. The guys pulled over to make sure there...
Whoops, my bad Jay. Guess I got the story wrong. Sorry.
David, glad you figured out the wheel weight issue. I couldn't remember if there was one on there or not when you called this morning. It had been too long since I had last looked at it to remember for sure.
If the temp is coming up...
I talked to David this morning. It was a little hard to hear over the roar of the Michelin XL's in the background, but he said they drove all night and were somewhere in Alabama. The truck seems to be running well so far.
Yes, the beds are the same. The mounting points on the A2 trucks are different though because the bed had to be offset more to the rear to provide clearance for the larger 14.00R20 tire between the cab and the bed.
The 939-series use the same doors JT, but yes the cab is a foot wider. It is very roomy and I may never be able to go back to a regular cab. It is a taller truck too on the super singles. I will find a pic on my PC with my 923A2 sitting next to AM General's M816 and post it.
Well, David and his co-driver made it to the Raleigh airport today. They rented a car at the airport and headed up to John's. Once they got there they spent some time going over the truck, securing parts in the back, and chatting with John. They headed for Raleigh this evening and met my...
Dang, now I'm gonna have to change my avatar. LOL. I must say that it is hard to believe that someone is going to drive that truck across the country considering it was a scrap/residue truck when I got it. I wish David the very best in his adventure and I must say I am a little jealous that...
