Negative on the sealer, it has been bone dry for 30+ years and it has a fair amount of rust inside from sitting. Mostly surface rust and what I could get with a power washer it took it down to bare metal quite easily. I'll be using some Evapo on it later.
I like the basket ball idea, however...
Understood every word, excellent instructions! I will make a cardboard template of the crown tomorrow to start with. I am fairly new to MV body work but in the 1 year I have been working on the truck I have learned quite a lot. The floor was the biggest challenge for me. Years ago the truck was...
AMX, I know you have repaired a "couple" dents before, your technique sounds interesting. Could you be a little more specific? I'd rather not pick up a new tank, they are difficult to find for the GMC's and aside from a little damage there's nothing wrong with this one. I'd rather save the good...
Jones, great idea! I have some thick steel plate laying around that I think would do the job nicely. Instead of filling in the screw holes I could just thread the screws back into them just a few turns, cut the ends flush and spot weld them in, I think this would work better than trying to fill...
First off, the tank has not had a drop of fuel in it for over 30 years and has been open for several months, there are no fumes inside thank god. As you can see from the pictures it's a pretty bad dent ontop. I do not have a stud welder, just my MIG. I am pretty darn good with it, and was...
Cool! Let me know if your coming through Yuma, and i'd be happy to show you the M211. Lots of places in AZ to go vehicle hunting, especially MV's. There's a guy here in my small home town that is selling a CHERRY completely original untouched M715 Jeep.
Back to the motor question. The poop is I...
This is not a want to buy ad, just wondering what the going rate for a solid 6.2 is these days. I am in SW Arizona so we have lots of junkyards here to pick through. Are 6.5's more expensive or harder to find than the 6.2's? A CUCV take out would be awesome.
I agree, paint it with fresh red! It's part of the trucks history, thousands of G749's were donated to forestry services and fire departments. And it looks like a well used but well taken care of M211 at that. That's incredible you went through so many trucks before settling on this one, good...
I have already contemplated taking the entire cab apart and refinishing everything. Please don't push me any further. I will be using those 50 grit stripping pads that attach to an angle grinder to strip the inside of the floor, then it will get thoroughly primed. I swear those pads will...
Has anyone done any free hand stencil work on their trucks? As I understand it this is how it was done in the field during WWII. I will likely be doing mt GMC this way, but will use thin masking tape to make the larger letters and help keep the lines straight. Please post pics if you can!
Forgot to mention, I also took apart the headlight buckets and marker lights, moderate rusting. Rust proofed them as well, be sure they all have a drain hole in the bottom too.
A lot of GMC's are nearing 60 years old, lots of time for rust to form on the thin sheet metal body parts. Mine has been an AZ vehicle nearly it's entire life. I was quite surprised to find that there was a moderate amount of rust forming in and around the cab parts. I can't imagine how much...
Old thread, but I love what you did with the printer cord Bjorn. I may just make the soft top for my M220 instead of getting a repro. Was wondering how one would go about making the rope/cord lip that slips into the windshield groove. Great idea!

Those wheels sure were spinning real fast, not a lot of traction on those branches. Is this how most GMC's do off road? Not a whole lot of Youtube videos on them. Found this one by accident. But, it's 5 minutes long!
I am in the middle of rattle canning my M220 in the Aervoe 24087 which is the earlier browner olive drab than the later 24084. I would agree with Cranetruck, I like doing small sections at a time with their 6 pack cases of the stuff. Wire brush loose paint, degrease oily areas, powerwash, dry...
I just used a set of needle nose pliers for the snap ring that holds the check valve in place. Came right out but I forgot about the spring underneath and it all went flying into my face. Luckily missed my eye, but I'll use your method next time. I used a fine thread tight fitting metric screw...
Lets give a huge, huge thanks to Jollyroger and Oldfart. **** fine tutorial and very self explanitory. They are actually pretty simple in design and I had no troubles taking mine apart. Mine had over 1q of fluid inside it, every darn seal inside was melted or crumbled and clogging up many of the...
