John, when you lift in this manner, it just sort of rotates in the can and "stands up" as it's lifted out? That one hoisting eye will carry the whole load safely?
Today, I observed that I don't seem to have enough safe attachment points to hoist a T-138 transfer case out of the can.
There is one large dog ear (circled in red) that looks safe and strong enough but I don't see any attachment points anywhere else. This view is looking straight down into the...
I replaced the transmission oil in my M813 today. A few interesting (concerning?) observations:
1st- There were super-fine metal shavings on the drain plug...sort of a silvery sludge. No chunks, the fluid was in better shape than I expected, still very viscous.
I started hyperventilating...
Well, like you, I'm new to owning and maintaining these trucks so I don't have a sure-fire answer. I would start by tracing one of the instrument lights back into the harness, and to the multi-function switch, checking for illegal wire splices and making sure that the instrument lights are...
Hmmm...check this out: https://www.amazon.com/Miles-Evercool-Concentrated-Antifreeze-Gallon/dp/B00YUL3N72#feature-bullets-btf
Green, does not say anything about "extended life", comes precharged with SCA, but you do have to add water.
EDIT: Nope, I was wrong. It does say "extended life" but...
Sigh...although I can't find any evidence that the Peak Fleetcharge I used is ELC, I think I'm going to drain and replace it with green coolant and manually add the SCA.
I found a Peak coolant that is not ELC but is also pre-charged with SCA. It's not green, it's pink but their own website says that the color is only for identification purposes.
The jug doesn't say "ELC" on it like other products I've seen.
This is what I used...
No, that isn't right. Instrument lights should not illuminate when the main switch is set to off or if the "panel" switch is set to off (vs. dim or bright)
They will be illuminated on max brightness when the "panel" switch is selected to "Park" and will be illuminated if the top "Service" switch...
Ah! Thanks. I got so hung up on the "MD" thinking that it referred to Maryland, that it didn't occur to me that it could mean Military Depot.
Well...I hope they did a good job of rebuilding this transfer case.
I went through the same hyperventilation about this stuff when I bought my truck.
It's true, you don't know if the military bothered testing the coolant and keeping up with the diesel coolant additive that is supposed to prevent cavitation. Might be a ticking time bomb, might not. Probably...
My "new" transfer case was apparently a rebuild. The tag says "BB MD" with a date of February, '94.
I've done some Googling but can't find a reference to any depot with that code.
Could it be Aberdeen, MD?
First, I'm beefing up the roof trusses to take a 1/2 ton chain fall so we can get the t-case out of the can and onto a transmission jack.
Scrounger has offered his help and use of the transmission jack. Kubu has offered to point at things and alternately cheer us on/criticize. ;)
It just gets my goat how utterly fearless he is about tearing stuff down and rebuilding on these trucks. And fast. It's like he's working on Honda Civics or something.
My new transfer case arrived and I got it home today. I'm sweating just swapping out whole components, not even tearing...
Ok, now I really understand why everyone owns a wrecker. You need a wrecker to support your other 5 ton truck(s).
My new transfer case has arrived. In a can. On 3 stacked pallets. Weighing 1,000 lbs.
I had it shipped to my office to reduce costs. They are understandably cranky about this thing...
Finally a couple of warm days.
I tinkered with the truck for a bit today.
For a few moments, I was genuinely concerned that I was making an expensive diagnostic mistake. I think I exaggerated the amount of play the rear output shaft has. The truck wasn't making the noise at first, but then...
