My suggestion is exhaust gas temperature gauges are more important than either of the above.

If you have a 200 amp alternator, there is a bypass so that electricity goes around the smart box/protective control box. That means you should be able to charge whether or not the box is good.
I would think your alternator or your wiring is suspect.
Others have told me that Melton had quality control issues. I am driving a 6.2 re-manufactured by melton and I am currently happy with it but in the back of my mind I am always worried.

Until you have a good starter box, do not hook up the glow plugs. You will only blow them out again. If you replace them, which you should, do not make the electrical connections. Not until you have a new control box
