Yup.. $500 rebuilt, $750 - $1000 new from what I've found. (The real thing.. found some obvious fakes cheaper, but not worth it for something like a starter..)
I recently fixed the apparent lack of functioning glow plugs, and now my M998 is starting quickly. Went for a drive, stopped somewhere for 30 minutes, went back out and hit start and the starter made a grinding noise. (Sounded like it didn't engage into the engine, but did spin full speed.)...
Success!
7/8 plugs needed a puller. All of the plugs were missing chunks, but nothing shiny to indicate any broke in the engine. So rolling the dice and not pulling injectors at this time.
new TMS and new EESS installed. Wait light works! Stayed on for 10 seconds, it turned off, hit the...
Was for my seating position. The previous owner did the PVC fording intake, so it may have been slightly wider, but it created a massive blind spot for me. (I'm about 6'1", seated at the furthest back position in the seat that lifts up to adjust positions).
Thus my warning for exterior...
At full height (deep water kit style), it pretty much blocks the passenger side rearview mirror when set to look at it through the front windshield. And I suspect we all know how difficult that mirror is to see out of when the regular soft-door is on, it's even worse with the arctic door.
My worry is that for jump starting the manual says if it doesn't start in 5 seconds, you need to wait for 3 minutes and then try again.
With the 6.2L/6.5L, will they ever start within 5 seconds?
Ohh just cause.. I took out the meter and checked the resistance on the glow plugs I removed.
One of the two it at .5 Ohm, the other is at 2 milliohm. I'm just shocked the one reads .5.
Anything special on the lines, I don't have any spare parts at this point, but I'm not against buying some bulk lines from O'Reilly or NAPA and replacing them. As for clamps, all of the ones I've looked at (up to this point) do have the correct clamps on them. :)
Ya, I bought the new box...
Ya, my EESS is shot. I have a brand new Natron? unit, along with new TSN to install. But I'm not going to do that until I've got the glow plugs swapped out.
My plan is to pull an injector tomorrow, blow in compressed air and see if any bits of metal come out. Part of me is hoping that they...
Got one out.. of course the tip is completely missing!
Glow plug has a 10mm hex. Says 746 on the head, and in the body 19207-12338771. MFG 3HCM3
guess I get to learn injectors now:mad:
Thanks this explained a lot. One question this talk about the "equipment record" book. I assume after each maintenance or dispatch, the forms are then moved into the equipment log book for long-term storage?
I was wondering if anyone had a pointer to the pages that would typically be in the HMMWV equipment log book? So far I've failed googling to find examples of the pages.
I'm planning on simply starting a log book on my project, but I'm curious what a REAL log book looks like.
I'm not sure I'm "skilled" enough with a vise grips to do that for all 8 cylinders.. especially the ones on the right side under the CDR and all the hoses.. as well as the one behind the generator on the left side..
YIKES! This is the crap I'm worried about, as I know the previous owner(s)...
