Running 24 volt bulbs in your lights will lower the current draw for the system and allow you to use lighter gauge wires to power them. Light output won't be affected and there's less chance of a wiring error getting across the wrong battery.

I can certainly appreciate the effort it took to put this together but refurbing an original gives you the real thing, not just a wannabe and with their availability it seems like the way to go. I'd love to have the space and equipment to be able to do this to mine and envy that aspect of your...
This is a link to a military pamphlet about troubleshooting military charging systems that I thought I'd post for the forum:

The best solution that I've found is to clean away as much of the corrosion as possible and they put some WD-40 on it then keep it dry. When I was in the Navy we had a spray corrosion inhibitor in OD green cans but I think it was meant for shipboard use and don't have a clue as to how well it...
I've played with these radios for the last 30 years or so and one of the things that kills them quickly is corrosion. There's nothing worse than removing a cover and seeing white powder in a radio. It can be cleaned and repaired but I usually move on to another set because they are less likely...
I've got to agree with Steve here, it sounds like you fried the glow plugs. He put up a great posting on the G503 site that details how the start system works in these trucks that's worth reading through here: http://g503.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=63
Military electrical systems are typically...
Wiring bulbs in series sounds like a great plan and will work electrically but anyone think about where the bulbs get used? You can't get 2 bulbs into a composite light that I know of and wiring headlights or taillights in series just doesn't make sense. Not when you start running extra wires...
You've opened up a real bag of worms here Maddawg. I agree that trying to interpret what the military used when they added nomenclature to anything in the communications world is a true mystery . Most of these are generalities and shouldn't be taken as gospel. MRC was a prefix used by the...
The Ab-588 has the same footprint as the MX-6707 or the AS-3900 so if all you need is a simple receiving antenna this fills the hole. It does use the AB-15 flex section and you can either use the MS-116/7/8 sections or an upper from the AT-1729 as your antennas. I think they were originally...
One of the problems that these radios and the 25s have is that when they sit for long periods unused the contacts in the modules oxidize and this can cause off freq problems. If they've been sitting for more than a few weeks run the tuning knobs from limit to limit several times to wipe the...
If you plan on using them as STT lamps then you won't be able to put them in series since each lamp will be powered from a different source. Use the KISS principle and get a couple of 24v lamps. That way you don't have to worry about dropping the voltage and you can wire them directly to the...
Juan is right, do yourself a favor and find some 10 - 30v LED lamps for the trailer. That way you never have to worry about them or change them should you decide to pull it with a 24v vehicle. All my trailers are outfitted that way so I can pull them with the 890 or the HMMWV. I didn't...
There was a time when GM was using circuit breakers instead of fuses in their vehicles and the symptoms you describe of coming on for a minute and then turning off sound like how circuit breakers operate. I'm not a GM guy so I can't guarantee this is your issue. Ask a dealer if the '86...
I have a couple of 117Ds and I'm trying to figure out how to mount one in a HMMWV. Their form factor is wrong for the standard radio rack unless you mount it sideways. I have a mount for an A model but then Ill need to find the longer hold down brackets for the D radio. I do have space in the...
I have several PRC-117s that I am looking for accessories for but they're pretty hard to find so I thought I'd ask here on SS. Please reply by PM if you have anything.
Thanks,
Kurt
