It isn't just a diesel type thing either. The Gasser M35's have the same air assist brake system. The diesel replaced them, so it was designed into the truck from the start.
By the way, you can stop the truck without it. I have resurected my truck from sitting in a field for the last 25...
Here is some on E-Bay right now.

You can still find brand new ones surplused for $60-$70. The top seal will cost you $20+ if you get one...
I found a German version of the Mermite in a surplus store a month ago. If your goal is sealed liquid transport, it might be a better way to go since it is about 1/3 bigger inside.
I saw no markings on it and haven't found any info since. This is the place that had them...
We did the oil over the piston testing yesterday. 147 was the lowest and 198 was the highest with the rest being somewhere in the middle. We put the plugs back in and almost got it to start before all the oil went away and all compression was lost again. We also figured out the fuel pump is...
That is a good question about the OA331 valve seats. I don't know the answer. But, if it doesn't, the seats wearing away would cause hard starting at all times, not just when hot.
As a reference, I redid my carb before I ever got the engine running. I have no problems with starting hot or cold.

I also think the pre-1964 -20 manual covers the carb. I have it at home and will look if the posted link doesn't answer your questions.
Check out your local airport. I am referring to small field, not commercial field. Anybody that works on airplanes is going to have scrap aluminum sitting around. Most A&P guys are real nice people and will probably help you out.
Looks great. What is that tank on the drivers side of the firewall? Neither of my two Gassers has that. Matter of fact, my regulator "bread box" is mounted about there on both trucks.
Thanks.
Sure will. We are having severe t-storms right now and my students won't be coming to class today. That means Thursday afternoon before the assigned student get to mess with it now.
All the valves appeared to be working properly when the head was off and we were turning it over to get oil psi.
The engine seems to turn over extremely slow compared to most every engine I know. Even my Reo Gasser with one dead battery spins faster than this thing with the plugs pulled, 2...
Got the engine all buttoned back up, got oil psi while spinning on the starter, got spark at the plugs and fuel in the carb. We get a puff, puff, puffffff every now and then. But, what we don't have is a running engine. Since we only messed with the head and head gasket, I started thinking...
I am probably the one written about above who flat towed a M35 with a M715. I had 2 715 stock engines in the bed and a bunch of tools. The lifting shackle mounts were gone from the M35 so I attached the towbar to a set of military axle wrap adaptors. That made the tow bar angle down from the...

As you can see, we all have different thoughts on this issue. If you already have a 5.3/4L80E combination sitting on the floor of your shop. Put it in and see if you like it. Or, sell it and use the money to get what you really want...
