No need to apologise, learning about vehicles and asking questions is what this site is all about. I am trying to learn about Aussie M816s and the differences from the US issue ones, but it's difficult from this side of the pacific! There are several veterans and a few trucks in museums with...
Normally that is a difference between the earlier 543's and 816's, though replacement grilles on 816's could be the slat type.
Many of the Australian wreckers used this space for added storage trays; Jerry cans etc. Even heard of one that had a 'bush toilet seat' there.
Canberra at the War Memorial Annex
apparently it's out-back, not in the public area. An ex Recy Mech was visiting.
Jake brakes were not a standard mod - only fitted on a small number (~4>) by the operators on a hush hush basis.
"Rookie bars" were standard over there, though 'topper' varied -...
Just found another pic of an Australian M816 in an Army museum collection. Did not know that 77 was the total purchase order from AM General.
Sharp eyes will pick out some of the differences to US issued wreckers.
NATO green ans Arctic white
Got the Land Rover Lightweight painted recently. Had a sample of the green sent over from the UK, white was just untinted base. Both were acquired from the local hardware store as water based exterior deck paint. Thinned for spraying and 'thrown on' with minimal...
Also - M870's (A0, A1, A2, A3...) were matched to a 6x6 (or 8x8) tractor which has a fifth wheel height approaching or above 60". They do adjust to a "civi" height fifth wheel (that's why they have interchangeable 2~3.5" king pins), so you will have to reset the locks to set the g-n to your...
Not clear from post - are you just prepping these trailers for use behind civi (12v) vehicles? If so - just get a cheap trailer lighting kit and replace the whole lot in one - hitch to rear x-mbr. Small trailers only need tail, stop/turn lamps. No need for triple markers etc. Then sell the...
I have 2 Hunter Medium tow bars (no feet), good condition, that will be there - tucked up safely with Mwmules. $150 ea.
Can't answer specific questions as these were won a long time ago and have been making their way across the country (SS underground railroad) - any pics were lost with last...
If anyone in the central East Coast/Southern New England is interested, here is the schedule for the DC3s and C47 Dakotas, who are mustering prior to an Atlantic crossing to join others for the 75th D-Day Commemoration Drops over Normandie.
Quite an unprecedented gathering.

Looks like a fun setup. Nice collection.
Anychance of some pics of the power buldge in the bonnet for the Jake? (Need to do that for my RAEME conversion on my M816)...
THat bracket on the frame is for a "bulldog" type swivel jack leg - may be other manufacturers that are similar. They have them at Tractor Supply type places.
Simple guide using your pocket change to measure snatch block sheaves when you are out at shows wanting to buy a correct snatch block for your winch.
"10 Ton SWL" snatch block
3/4" snatch block for M816 Drag winch
7/8" snatch block for M916(A1)
5/8" snatch block - "5 ton" front...
OMG - I looked for "Sled Driver" by Brian Shul, the book mentioned in the lecture/presentation - no longer in print but copies are out there - any where from $300+ to over $2000!!!, for a signed one.
Would love to see some of the pics that he mentioned.... especially the "You've got 10 seconds"...
Too much going on in that vid - would like to see a diag to understand the 45:1 ratio. The last line would have to go one heck of a long way to multiply for that ratio!
