I think I may be speaking for many, but if you want to "Hot Rod" an M816 - your words, please do not come visit my state, of if you do, let me know when and I'll keep off the road.
I know that is not what you meant - but it's what we 'read'.
Yes, I too want to improve my 816, even fuel...
Factually Jeff, I quite agree with your statements.. However I like to look at it a little differently.
Personally, I see the voluntary aquisition of a CDL as the striving to better ones self. Being held to a higher standard is the result or even reward of putting in a greater effort.
Why...
Your symptoms sound very deja vu ... Had the same thing happen last summer (see thread "what have you done WITH your wrecker") but on my M816 which is all mechanical - no hydraulics (on the winches).
Think you are safe to say it's shear pin - however I'll not be fixing mine 'till it gets back...
Moving crane hoist
Time to rev this thread up again. New sub topic for argument.
Recent pic in M62 thread got me thinking about moving the crane hoist to increase drum capacity.
Moving the hoist winch back to the M62 location would increace the crane function beyond the floor ie., over a...
I wanted to add these pics of an Aussie M816 with a similar roof rack to the Canadian Deuce TM thread since the pics in the TM don't really show the whole truck - couldn't add it to the actual thread naturally.
Part of this rack was used to carry an extra (not 'spare') 300' of 3/4" winch cable...
100% agree - that's why the right half of the pic (before) has those handles and the left half (after) doesn't - plan A was to utilise existing holes. ZERO drilling of new holes. Maybe reaming out a size or two that's all.
Yes - side rails (in red) are for guiding and stiffness of the sub...
Robo - a narrower civi plate would help both in width and height, but if you want to keep the military 5th wheel then here are my first thoughts on "wide 5th plate" etc. ...
Will expand on detail but I need to know if there is enough clearance between the inner dual and the frame under full...
Proof load - the correct way is to use a load cell. Look up your local crane company - they have to recertify annually(? - Ron...) and when ever doing repair work so you may be able to stop by or ask at a decent rigging supply Co - they may be able to rent one out for the day.
As far as...
The optional installing kit/tool they sell has a punch with a hole at the other end that you can use to bend over the strands past the plug. I used needle nose pliers and a hose clamp like Ron said. Just make sure that you can see the cable ends through the little inspection hole when you are...
Really appreciate the help and transport etc. I'll give you a shout when I can swing by.
Here is a pic of what it's for/where it goes...
This is one of the pics I tried to e-mail you.
Don't laugh - that's one of those golden egg BII pieces that never seems to exist on released trucks. Definately need pics and dims so the rest of us can copy!!
Enjoy : ) : )
Interesting camo scheme - are you keeping it that way? Makes a refreshing change to the gr-br-blk...
... and welcome to the unofficial underground 'wrecker owners club'!
Tractor Pintle / Receiver hitch
Not sure if you are looking for a quick detatch (QD) and one that is almost unnoticable when not in use type deal, but I made one for my lighweight wrecker over 20 years ago. The drop frame hangs from the pintol hitch then bolt on braces go forward and up to...
If you go for legs, remember that as the bed comes off, or more correct, as the truck pulls out from under the bed, there will be 'pulling' on the rear legs, conversly, as it is put on the bed, there will be 'pushing' of the rear legs. So a stiff leg or brace will be needed from the foot of the...
Yes - the King Pin plate acts as the mid cross member of the sub frame (S/F). The "saddle" plates at the front locate the front of the S/F left and right, but I would probably add a turn buckle (or chain binder) or two at the front or somewhere to clamp things a bit to stop the 'empty' rattle...
No biggie, just make sure front wheels drive and up it goes - no ramps, no fuss...

Limiting factor being traction and approach/departure angle.
If you look at civi dump trucks you will see additional "frame" rails (smaller "C" channels) lay on top of the trucks frame. Those would hold the pivot at the back, the cylinders towards the front and in your case hold the King-pin plate. Quick connects 'Pioneer' or otherwise from tractor...
QUOTE=MWMULES;1293468] I had thought about recessing a box in the middle with the king pin but decieded against it, when we laid it out it took up way too much of the bed.
Just to throw out a little compromise... Much as I'd love to do a channeling job on the floor, I have to agree to keep...
