a top mechanic at a dealership (now a retired brigade LTC) told me in the early 80's the small-block 727 was designed as a car tranny and should not have been put in any of the trucks that would be doing real work, especially the full-time 4x4's. .. that was his opinion... But the 727 was also...
If you have a smooth floor and a tranny jack, or at least a large floor jack, you can safety-chain the tranny/xfer assembly to it, unhook the driveshafts, unbolt the bottom half of the rear-mount crossmember, and roll the entire thing back just enough to get at the TC and see if there is a PB...
just to be clear, it doesn't matter which 70's year the 318 is.. some of the ones mated to automatics had the PB holes, others don't .. It's a crapshoot... I think the same for the 360's as well, but I don't remember. I converted a 360/auto truck to std once, but I also had had that engine...
not really a big deal if you have everything on hand and ready .. There is only one thing that will stop you from doing this conversion, some 318's with automatics do not have a pilot bearing hole machined into the crank...
I did one muscle car tranny conversion in the 1970s and three mopar...
Going back to the original poster of this string from Binder Dan. Sorry I didn't intend to hijack his thread here. His bantam on that CCKW is quite something. His looks to be an original as-built machine. Bantam's were also a popular modification to ex-military 6x6's in the late-40's thru 60's...
I am not having luck finding anyone handy who can take on these projects. They either have tons of their own things to do, or they are afraid of green machines. I'm even having a hard time getting someone to replace the wood decks on 6 of my my farm wagons with PT lumber.. Not many people out...
Yes it's sunk pretty good, and in clay too. It will come out, just needs a lot of patience. Perhaps one wheel at a time and get blocks and planks under them as we go... Haven't done the job yet, he is still working on an agreeable purchase price ..
On another story, I recovered a Lorain...
I was in your position until I was 17. From then up through the decades until just a few months ago, I was in the more-dreaded "I don't have the money nor the time" position :ROFLMAO:
Here is the grandson of the man whose name is on the pictured machine below. I remember when this company had two of these ex-USMC IHC M5H6's. One has a Bantam crane/dragline (pictured), and the other had a Bantam shovel which also had an additional backhoe attachment for it. I remember them...
I spotted a XM215 almost 25 miles from me hiding among a bunch of storage trailers. I inquired to find he also has tons of extra parts for these including double-shaft pto's for dumps and fuelers, tailgates, extra NOS radiator and extra bed. It has been there about 15 years, driven up from...
I prefer to leave well-enough alone as long as nothing is rubbing or in an inappropriate place / Example no-go's are nylon placed in areas prone to physical damage or high heat, or copper lines placed in probable rubbing contact with any high-amperage wire/cable . I believe everything has...
That S1900 likely had a 2-speed rear axle mated to that B-tranny, no doubt was a good combo... I can't answer your rpm loss question, and what follows won't help you with your particular situation,. However, what I'm about to share may help others out there who, like you, wish to close up that...
Took the spare carrier off the parts M818 , built mounts and bolted it to the existing holes in the freightshaker's frame. Next step is to attach an aluminum slip-proof deck plate where the toolbox was. Never thought something from a 5-ton could improve a class-8 CMV and look good . Next step...
yup, it's crap fuel .. i regularly add lube to the fuel when the trucks are working .. the three i had trouble with were expected to work but it didn't happen thus they didn't get the lube .. even the fuel oil we use in the off-road equip isn't what it used to be , still having trouble freeing...
Will's post above is as always, spot-on about these engines. I have learned more than a few things from his posts. Been behind 855's of all sizes for over 40 years but never had to tinker with them to keep them running until the last few years. And I know I haven't seen it all yet when it comes...
I'm no mathematician but yes you likely know it will increase the gap between 4th and 5th, getting a top speed around 58mph if your stock is 52mph, and you are correct it will reduce the notorious 3rd-4th jump. What I believe you really want to know is if the NHC250 has the power to handle the...
