Ditch the ugly angle-irons atop the winch.

Cut a piece of 3/16 Alum diamond plate to just fit on top of the winch.

Paint, drill, & bolt on.

Does the strength needs, and gives you a place to stand when checking yer oil.
Yup , I did the same thing with my winch , for exactly the same reason .

The boys wanted to help, so they got busy pressure washing and wire wheeling:

And I'm happy to say I'm moving into a bigger shop on news we are getting another "baby". (I'll post about that recovery probably Sunday. It's an awesome surprise!)

Spare on the door is all I ever knew. When I got to my first unit, we still had about 4-5 trucks. They all had door spares. I kinda liked them. We drove the last 4-5 M37's to the Böblingen DRMO, in 1973. A half hour after we hit the road, our "Convoy", and that's stretching the word convoy, broke up, and it was every man for himself. I ran out of gas, and bummed some from a Kasserne someplace that I have no idea where it was. Too many bowls. Then my truck would no longer allow me to push the clutch in. The linkage bolt and nut fell out. Again, too many bowls. So I took my sleeping bag and passed out on top of the canvas roof. At zero dark thirty, I heard some sounds, sat up and loudly said, "Morning! Only to look down at a MP with his pistol pointed at me. After we both calmed down, he helped me use some wire to fix the clutch, and I made it to Böblingen. I was not the last one to show up. Everyone broke down or ran out of fuel. But that was some road trip. Ken, you are so lucky to have such a truck!

Pulled the bell housing and transmission today and pressure washed the engine to prep for cleanup/paint. Found a rotted out freeze plug, so that's next on the hit list!

Also uncovered her cast marks on the block and found a data plate!

And on a side note:

I am **so** glad I wasn't able to fire her up when I tried initially. Had I done so, I would not have found these issues that would surely have jumped up and bit me in the butt later! While she's a bigger task than I originally bargained for, I am thoroughly enjoying every minute working on her.

The lesson here I guess is to never just assume your truck is good to go; especially the older ones. I am so glad she will be thoroughly gone through and 100% when I get her done!
