I would do a compression check, you do this with a special fitting that goes into the Glow Plug hole. There was a thread on this not to long ago. It is a diesel, it should just run; but maybe there is a vacuum leak someplace.

I bypassed the fuel filter, kept my foot on the pedal just a touch and dropped it into gear. I was able to drive it forward, about 10 feet. It was able to climb over my best air rachet without breaking a sweat -- sigh.

I think if I adjust the idle speed up just a bit I might be take it around the block. It's not smoking nearly as much as earlier. Once I unplugged the fuel filter block, the glow plug light stopped comming on...

No, i put on a new filter. My thought was that maybe the base was leaking, but it doesn't appear to be the case. I think it actually was the fuel lines going to it. One of them had a splice in the middle. Tomorrow I'm going to hook it all back up again, with brand new fuel line, and see if I can get somewhere with it.

As I mentioned on page 5 of this thread that was exactly what was causing my M38a1 to do what your truck is doing. It is really difficult some times to find a fuel line with a splice in it. I hope that was the issue so you can get it on the road.

Yeah, this was down behind the intake at the back.

O yea...if you guys want an example of how crappy a spliced fuel line is take a soda straw and cut a small line length wise into the straw and try drinking with it...it works but it "sucks"...lol

no such luck.

Went out there today, replaced the hoses I could, re-installed the fuel filter block(I couldn't find anywhere it was leaking, and the thing looked brand new.

I bled filter out, cracked the lines on each cylinder, and turned the key. It started instantly and sounded good.

I let it run a while...still some white smoke, but nearly as much. I drove it around the block and it would barely make it up the slight hill to my house...maybe 15 miles per hour. Floored.

I parked it, let it idle a while...sounds like it's idling kinda high to me...smoke mostly gone, put it in reverse and it died.


Shut it down adn went back into the house. I'm done for the night. Man, I just want to be able to drive this thing. It's killing me.

I feel your pain, I spent about 30 mins on my M1009 today in this heat, wow it was like 98 outside in Fort Worth. I removed and checked all of my glow plugs and they were all good, just rusty contact points, so I cleaned them. Afer that I was done, too hot outside and really the only project I needed to do.


Is the IP aligned correctly to the engine block?

There is a mark on the Injector Pump base and the engine block, you may have to clean the area to see them. These should be aligned with each other, if not loosen the blots and line them up. See if that fixes your issue. I do not recall if I looked at that when I saw it at the lot, but my M1010 has this issue and was not aligned.

Yeah, I checked that, it's lined right up. I'm thinking either we're still getting air into it, or the IP is shot. Which is wierd, cuz the IP, like everything else on this truck, looks new.

well...I got it out on the road again...part of my problem was it was shifting way to early. The gizmo on the side of the IP was shoved all the way one direction. Gonna adjust that tomrrow, but I shifted it manually and was able to get it up to normal speeds. Still trys to stall out at stop signs, and takes forever to get up to speed.

Installed the front drive shaft and the tilt wheel. Tomorrow I'm going to put the plates on it and get it out on the road more...maybe put some fresh diesel in it.

Good luck. That sounds like the IP mine did the same thing at around 96000 miles on the beast. I used the process of elimation to try to find it. First fuel filter, then fuel pump, then fuel filter base with new hoses last was IP had that replaced runs perfect.

I've got a friend who has a junk school bus sitting on his land...parked it there 2 or three years ago when it overheated. It has a 6.2L in it...I wonder if the pump would work on mine.
