No problem. Yeah, my M1009 got towed back in 2010. I went to leave for work and my car had a flat tire... So I took a risk and drove the M1009, which was registered 'non-op' at the time. CHP went flying by me on the freeway, slammed on his brakes and got back behind me and lit me up. Bad...
This is what I was going to say. There's no reason for a civilian chase vehicle to be right near you making it difficult for people to pass. On my 1,700 mile HEMTT recovery, our chase vehicle stayed back about 1/4 mile on 2-lane roads for this exact reason...
You know if it's not registered, the wheels can not be touching the road at all... So you'd need a lowboy, or maybe a single-trip permit from the DMV ($20). Without one or the other, the towing company will probably not want to do it, but even if they do, remember in CA, registration expired by...
The deuce has non-op registration and I let the insurance lapse. Part of the deal with my wife* when I bought the HEMTT was that I would sell the deuce, which I am going to be doing soon... It needs a few things to be repaired, the windshield wipers stopped working, the speedometer cable broke...
Ah. I had looked up M9 in my book and it comes up as a WWII tank transporter trailer... Giving your truck a nickname that is the M-number of other vehicles is going to confuse a lot of people! I did remember another thread where this trip was mentioned and I figured it was a 5-ton truck. Other...
I won't be able to make it to this one, not with an MV anyway. The HEMTT is going to be down until at least the fall for heavy maintenance and upgrades, I'm rebuilding the cooling system (new radiator, hoses, and water pump) and installing Oshkosh factory air conditioning.

I thought that cable was already the same? What did you change? The connectors and covers are readily available from Mouser, if we could find the exact spec of the cable itself it would be easy for anyone to make their own brand new cable...

The manual shows, and my truck has, 180 degree thermostats (there is one for each head), and a 195 degree shutterstat to turn on the fan. My fan seemed to rarely come on, yet the gauge read high, so I tested the fan clutch and replaced the shutterstat... It made no difference. But at least now...
Have you guys noticed that large quantities of M872 trailers are being sold as scrap (must be mutilated) due to a 'quality deficiency'? I always liked these trailers... Anyone familiar with what the issue is? I read on here that there was a MWO to strengthen the frame near the king pin. Are...
My plan was to change it in Louisiana, drive the 1,700 miles home, and then change it again. When switching, Allison considers the transition 'complete' after that 2nd oil change... But I haven't done it yet, so I'm still at like 80% TranSynd. It's on my to-do list!
I would go for it, especially with that low a mileage... But it seems to be a crap shoot. I changed the fluids on mine in Louisiana before driving it 1,700 miles home, and I've put a few thousand more on it since then and had no problems. I don't have any data to compare my temps to, since I...
I've never tried pressurizing the fuel tank, but I'm sure it would work and probably not do any damage as long as you're careful. The brass hand pump James posted is the method of priming described in the HEMTT manuals as well as Detroit manuals... There's a pipe plug on the secondary fuel...
Hey Mike,
Are they loose or tight? My passenger's side inside latch is really tight, you'd think it can't be opened but it does if you put some muscle to it, and a little easier if you pull the door in slightly at the same time. If it's loose it may need the adjusting as mentioned above. I...
DELO 100 is available in 30 and 40 weight but 30 should only be used in cold climates; it's not suitable for summer heat.
I concur with dk8019. A friend of mine has a Detroit+Allison powered coach. There's a retired Allison engineer who hangs out on his bus-nut forum, he wrote the lube specs...
Thanks for the compliments... One thing that I like about my installation is that I didn't drill any holes in the hard top or cab, and it's easily removable without any tools, though it's easier with two people. On the hard top back section, where it bolts to the cab, there is a lip pointing up...
I mounted mine on the back cab wall up high between the seats, with the crew boxes at the same height in the corners. The three units are all mounted on a 1/4" aluminum plate so that it is removable. If I were going to mount them permanently, I'd probably still chose the same location, but that...
