what is the largest tire you can put on a XM215

You could run duel 11x20s no on the existing rims problem. The Canadian version M216 ran singled 11x20 on M135 rims. I think any tire size larger would really cut in the already stretched HP of the powertrain. Good luck. Karl

M135 PTO question!! Can the winch pto function while the truck is moving?

The PTO is attached to the transfer case on the M135 / M211 series truck, so the RPM of the PTO would depend on the the engine speed and transmission gear. Usually the PTO was intended for use while the vehicle was stationary (transfer case in neutral). The PTO can be engaged simultaneously with...

    Giving up on M135.........

If I have read your posts correctly, you have not replaced the rubber hoses yet? If all but one wheel cylinder releases when you let go of the brake petal it has to be a bad brake line. Most likely the rubber line to the front wheel or possibly a corroded steel line. You have confirmed this when...

White engine smoke until operating temperature

I ran ours with the crack for about a year, never any water in the oil or oil pressure issues. I only noticed an anti-freeze odor when the smoke got real heavy. When I pulled the manifolds it was obvious that it was the center cylinder head that had the leak. Ended up pulling all three heads and...

White engine smoke until operating temperature

Our NHC250 (M813) produced white smoke on cold start ups. Ended up being a cracked cylinder head. Not a big deal, the heads are easy to change on this engine.

    Giving up on M135.........

I suspect the air pak is the problem. The Bendix air pak rebuild kit used on the 5 ton M51 / M813 series is the same rebuild kit used on the M135 / M211 with the exception of one rubber seal. Not sure of current pricies, but several years ago rebuild kits sold on ebay for $25-50, I have rebuilt...

    My M3 Halftrack

Hey Don, Great progress! You may want to have your engine block pressure tested before rebuilding, these old 160AX blocks are known for water jacket cracks. I'm redoing our engine this winter because of a cracked block. Our halftrack engine came with a cracked block behind the oil cooler, had...

Moving my M3 halftrack in the snow

Hey Don, I have noticed the variant on your frame before, that is one weird / mutant set up. Could be different for the GMC, I never had a chance to check one out. Any chance the brace could be off an International?

Moving my M3 halftrack in the snow

Your serial number puts your halftrack around late 42 production. Our M2 was rebuilt into a M2A1 Serial #2754XX production date approx 5/43. I can't explain your data plate being marked M3. You can decide to restore your track as an M2 (w / skate rail) or M2A1 (w / pulpit ring mount). If you...

Moving my M3 halftrack in the snow

Possibly incorrect data plate? Look at the LH frame rail outside surface above the front drive axle, the serial number will be stamped there. White used numbers only, 6 digit serial # starting with 2. Autocar serial numbers will start with M2-serial #. Diamond T did not manufacture M2 or M2A1...

Moving my M3 halftrack in the snow

Looking at pictures of your track's frame, looks like you have an M2 or M2A1. The frame is overall 10" shorter, wrap around rear idler braces and close spacing of the two rear cross members are the visible differences. What does your data plate say and is it a White or Autocar?

Moving my M3 halftrack in the snow

Could your front axle or front brake shoes be locked up? Unusual for it be that difficult to maneuver. I had ours at a show once where the ground was mud, the track only wanted to travel straight without the front drive engaged. Nice starting point, stand back and watch your wallet hemorrhage...

    XM215 bed options

The M215 dump bed was very unique, only common with the early Reo M59 dumpers. Finding an original will be tough since these have all seen 50-60 years of abuse. The M211 bed is 2'-3' longer and wider. Guess with lots of effort you could do anything. Might be easier to find a similar commercial...

    M813 + xlz 395/85r20

Thank you for the responses! Our existing 14.00x20s have some minor sidewall cracking, I'm considering replacing them for safety before summer. The smaller 395s look like a good option. Karl

    M813 + xlz 395/85r20

Hello All, Anyone running XLZ 395/85R20 tires on their 5 tons, what are your experiences? Currently I'm running 14.00x20s on Hemitt rims on our M813A1, this vehicles purpose is to pull our Halftrack to shows. My thoughts are with the smaller 395s (46") compared to the 14.00x20 (49") I could...

    My first heavy truck xm215

Remember each wheel hub has two wheel cylinders. I suspect one of your rear wheel cylinders is rusted and caused the shoe to bind when things got hot enough. Love your M215 w/Detroit, thanks for posting.

How / what to inspect before buying half track project

The halftrack that we started with was purchased for $1800 and ended up being a parts vehicle. These are pictures of our starting track and the almost completed project 7 years and lots of $ later. Any halftrack is worth saving even if it only ends up as a parts track.
