Before everything gets locked etc. here is some rear winch mounting ideas. I seriously consider doing this. I have a 17.5k winch sitting in the garage waiting for a new home.

Oh, that s*cks! Would you mind posting a video of the desaster? From the video above I cannot visualize why it wouldn't work. Lift main arm, swing extension arm all the way down, lower main arm and cradle. Or does it require a different stowing procedure? I suppose you could leave the crane...
@montaillou You like to think outside the box. I like and admire that. Your idea about a portable winch is interesting. When you pull the truck sideways, it is because the thing is sunk and stuck. The additional force required to overcome the drag of sand or mud with wheels sunk in to the hub...
So many questions relate to basic winch operation. I do not want to "hijack" the thread, rather start at a level where even less experienced operators can join in.
To get comfortable with the winch, I would suggest...

The idea is to bump the starter (not hold the button down) with the shutoff pulled. If fluid had accumulated in the space between piston and head (because a headgasket leak or dripping injectors), the rotation would come to a dead stop. Hopefully with not enough force behind it to break...
On the fuel tank it is 1/8. I used a 90 degree elbow 1/8 male to 1/4 female to fit a standard 1/4 in gauge. Take with a grain of salt...going from memory here.

The downfall of being mission oriented. Adapt, improvise, overcome - just get it done. I need to work on that. I did park the truck early and for the Sat night shift my condition for driving is working heat!

@92ramaro
To the wide-eyed, bushy-tailed observer from a warm climate this may LOOK like fun! Oh, how naive! :) For somebody that just drove an International Tri-axle last night for 4 hours at -11F (-14C) WITHOUT any cab heat whatsoever, with the side window open so the windshield would not...
For someone who looks at 3D printing as space wizardry, I am very excited that replacement parts or improvement parts made from unobtainium could perhaps be designed and manufactured by our very own group here!
I have nada to contribute on the technical/CAD front but would sure be willing to...
I would add: You can put a pressure gauge where the T fitting is on top of the fuel tank. With the in-tank-pump running, you should see around 5-7 psi there. I left my gauge plumbed in because.....I can. I like the visual that the pump is working when I do my walkaround inspection.
If you put a...
@montaillou If you had had a centre axle lockout, you would have locked that in very gingerly at that point, I suppose! The parking brake better work!
I also read a reply from a forum member that got hung up in a parking lot on the speed bumps and was unable to traverse without locking the axle...
If by "dust injector hose" you mean the heater hose/duct, then vendors such as Erik's have the right stuff, also https://www.aircraftspruce.ca/search/search.php?s=air%20duct
By the way, when you have the heater out, you can actually shorten the box to make it take up less space!
Not sure whether you mean the cab cover or the cargo cover. If it is the latter.....
