    anything 1009's are notorious for?

You need to make a friend at an Air Force base with heavy aircraft! We have a bead breaker for KC-135 wheels/tires (which are split rim) and I'll bet it would make real quick work of those wheels. Sure beats trying to do it by hand (and yes, we've given it a try -- talk about work!). I don't...

My home made harmonic balancer installation tool

Now, for $15 I'd have gladly snapped one up! The ones I saw were ~$70 -- just a bit much for a one-and-done tool. The local NAPA didn't show me the 2291... wish they had. That's perfect.

My home made harmonic balancer installation tool

Yep, I have seen those NAPA tools, and they are nice, but didn't want to buy one for a single-use. NO ONE rents one with the proper M16 fine thread adapter, so I wound up using this. Worked like a charm.

My home made harmonic balancer installation tool

Yes, it's hillbilly, but, by God, it worked! I got tired of the local Fastenall's inability to get me an M16 bolt with the right thread pitch of sufficient length to use (the long ones they ordered in were all only partially threaded), so I just took a bolt of stock length and welded a Grade 8...

Starter Brackets, Bolts and other starter info

Any guesses on the nut size on that DD starter stud? I should finally be able to finish my harmonic balancer install tonight, and could properly install that nut while I'm under there if I knew what size to pick up at the hardware store. Thanks in advance!

Starter Brackets, Bolts and other starter info

THAT'S the picture I was looking for -- I knew I'd seen it! I have a direct drive starter and support bracket. Thank you!!!

Starter Brackets, Bolts and other starter info

I'm ashamed to say I'm not sure. I have been looking for comparison pictures t no avail. I do see the different brackets photographed in this thread, so I suppose I can crawl under and see which bracket I have if all else fails. I guess I was hoping that the studs were the same size and no...

Starter Brackets, Bolts and other starter info

Yeah, I think I'll just grab a handful of metric nuts from 10mm on up and take them all out with me. They all know me by now as the "Army truck guy," and I am sure they'll trust me with a handful to 10 cent hardware. I was just hoping to pick the right one up on the first try when I run by...

Starter Brackets, Bolts and other starter info

Hey gents -- this thread prompted me to check my starter bolts, and I discovered that the nut that secures the rear bracket to the starter itself is missing. Glad I saw this and checked the hardware! Anyway, anyone have any idea what size the stud on the starter is? I don't really want to...

    Hack-job crew cab CUCV?

Might watch your state's DOT sales, too -- I have seen several crew cab trucks in the classic blaze orange color of the Illinois DOT run through the local county auctions over the years. Might be hard to find one decent one, but worth a try!

Crank pulley play: how much is acceptable?

Thanks, Keith_J -- and sorry for the video snafu. Should be available now. Yes, in any case, I plan to swap the balancer out. I had scribed lines on it in white grease pencil a few weeks ago, and the outer ring has not migrated any (yet). It's quite hard, though, and I suspect it's the...

Crank pulley play: how much is acceptable?

Thanks, fellas. I went out and crawled under the truck while she was running, and am now wondering whether maybe I have a bent crank pulley. The balancer seems to have essentially no wobble, while the pulley has a little bit. I tried taking video, which turned out somewhat iffy. In any case...

    M1009 Flexplate Part No.

Doesn't Saturn or some other surplus parts supplier offer good used flex plates for around $30? I could swear I've read this numerous times in the forums here. EDIT: here we go -- http://www.steelsoldiers.com/cucv/87043-flywheel.html Under $30 from Saturn (or they were at the time of that...

Crank pulley play: how much is acceptable?

Thanks, Tanner -- so no play at all, however minute, is acceptable, huh? Better set aside a Saturday to tear things apart!

Crank pulley play: how much is acceptable?

After a good bit of searching, I see lots of mention of bad harmonic balancers and some stories about bent crank pulleys, but I'm wondering whether my crank "wobble" is enough to worry about, and I have yet to find a thread that addresses this matter. In short, I have been looking my M1009 over...

    Trip up Mt. Washington

GREAT pics! Your truck looks right at home with those Rovers. I'm jealous -- that's some fine stomping ground. It's awfully flat around here...

Great pics -- thanks for posting! I love that neck of the woods... pines everywhere.

    M1009 Front Hub Temperatures

What you describe sounds far too hot, but this is a case where one of those IR thermometers is really nice to have. I bought my dad one last year to watch the hub temps on his tow-behind camper; they have gotten really cheap the last few years. Anyway, any significant temperature difference...

    m1009 gauge installation

That ISS tach is sharp; any idea what sort of sender it uses? The TinyTach is appealing in it's simplicity, but in little else. The ISS tach looks the part, and is very affordable. I just wonder how compatible the sender will be.

    m1009 gauge installation

I'm curious about this as well -- anyone? Meantime, I'm afraid I'd stuck with the yo-yo gauges. They seem to be working OK, but it would be nice to have something more appropriate (read: MILSPEC).
