Nice save - it's not often to see a GMC deuce still in fire department livery anymore, most fire departments went to M35 series deuces a long time ago.
Thanks for the answers, guys - I think you are right. I think this truck had an angled bracket going from driver's side wall to back wall, and the ACAV mount/tank mount (whatever you call it) was mounted facing toward the rear quarter, with a M23 cradle and .50 cal on it.
Anyone know what kinda mount this is? Looks like a M23 cradle sitting on some strange curved base. Seen the curved base elsewhere, would like to know what it was originally on.
Perhaps that's why I found a cellphone in the weeds tossed out by another offroader last year. Couldn't get coverage, so, time to throw the cellphone out the door!
Was there any gensets with the same engine as the deuce? Might be in the market for a multifuel genset in the next year, wanted to see what I would have to keep an eye out for.
That's about as clean an M880 variant as I've ever seen. Most of them I've come across have been wore out and rusted through, they just got used up after surplussed out because as civvy pickups and vans they were used heavily by woodchucks, laborers, etc., and by the time they were done with...
Sorry no updates in a couple days - I have been working on it, I have just misplaced my camera and can't take any pictures at this time.
The armor has been ordered, as well as a pile of parts. I'm waiting on the UPS man for a ton of parts to restore this beast. In the meantime, I have...
That used to be the trailer on which a large engine driven (as opposed to electric motor driven) genset used to start and power jet aircraft, mostly fighters. The AF/M-32A-13 set was used for several different aircraft, including the F-106 Delta Darts, F-4 Phantoms, and F-100 Super Sabres...
Yes, aluminum is lighter and easier to work with, but it's a lot more expensive. The steel I'm getting is 1/4-inch thick, probably not good enough to stop incoming fire, but light enough for the M37 to move around and not break axles. I don't know how thick the originals were, but the armored...
For reference, when I replace bolts, if the bolt is required for a structural part, always Grade 8. If high strength isn't really required, always stainless steel. Cuz I NEVER want to deal with rusted bolts again....
For over-the-road use, the M916A2 can handle the older M915 and M920 duties. For tactical use, the M1088 5-ton FMTV tractor is slated to handle the loads.
