Its true that the cylinders are the same volume but think of it this way......
Without fuel the cylinder basicly compresses air from atmosphereic pressure, The volume of the cylinder.
Now add some fuel, The fuel when compressed detonates and expands more than the volume of the cylinder...

I just purchased a 1976 Bombardier Skidozer 262. It appears that they have seen service in Canada and by the USAF to move people and equipment through the snow. Not sure if this one has been used by the military but Ill do some more digging.

Ive been dealing with the same issue on my truck. Seems 30 year old rubber isn't quite the same as it used to be.... go figure. Just have it resealed at a good shop and your troubles should go away. I took the same steps and had the same symtoms as your haveing.
That shelter is sitting cross the bed, Much shorter than the S-280. It may have been specialized to that application which would make it a tough one to find. Good luck!
