In stock form the front of the cab is basically hard mounted (just rubber bushings) to the frame and doesn't allow much movement. Also have the clutch/brake/throttle linkages that won't allow much either.
Maybe a short bag from a 'day cab' truck such as dump trucks. Change the rear cab mount so...
Haven't touched the project much lately but spent a little time on it today. Cut the frame extensions (last of the m51a2 frame) to 24" long. Will trim them down if necessary as the roller gets built. Also did a bit more trimming at the front of the bed to make room for the winch.
Trust the stock grill guard if you want, my experience hitting a few white tail deer with 73-87 gm trucks/suv's tells me it's not strong enough for deer at 55+mph.
Grill guard is only as strong as what it's mounted to, which is a not very thick stock bumper. Won't live up to deer at highway speeds and gets pushed into the fender/hood when a white tail doesn't move.
Good find, who knows with the exact history on these trucks haha. Bumper numbers are for field artillery. 631 1/114, SV93. Truck was built in 1972 and DRMO'd in 2008 so 36 years of service as a wrecker.
Good find and agreed on the appearance of the m809 series.
Paint could be a older paint scheme that is showing up. My 1972 m816 has at least 3 layers of paint schemes on it that I can tell. Vietnam olive drab, Desert storm tan, and carc camo are all visible layers on mine.
Hahaha yea. At least a grinder cutoff wheel didn't explode into my leg again.
Chopped the last few useful items off of the m51a2 frame remains today. Going to use the 2 pieces of frame rail as the mount for the tail roller. The mount will stick out just a little past the roller to help serve as...
Coolant heater that can be powered by a generator or battery bank is the best option.
If you have to do a fire under the engine a much safer way to do it is with a small wood stove (like a modified ammo can) with the exhaust vented out. That way you get the radiant heat with no concern of...
Manual outriggers were used for the last time today. Stuffed a piece of wood between the chassis/wrecker bed sub frame along each rail to lift the bed high enough to clear the rivets. Then raised up the outriggers and used the bed winch on the pickup to drag each outrigger out of it's tube. That...
Why not use a double sided transmission PTO and use the rear output for a hydraulic pump? Or are the pump requirements too much for that PTO to handle.
Give me an LMTV for free, I'll turn right around and sell the thing. My unit used them hard offroad when active duty and they were constant problems so no thanks.
Eaton Fuller makes manual transmissions, Allison makes auto transmissions. Both are good choices just depends on which type of trans is wanted. Eaton does make a remote shift cover for their transmissions that is required in a cab over/cab before engine truck. For a transfercase either a T138 or...
Looking at doing this to my 82 k30 crew cab. Found a bunch of twist caps, electrical tape only connections, and old/brittle wires. Debating going to a water proof fuse block mounted outside the cab and using bulkhead fittings to run the wires into the cab that are needed.
Pinion brakes should never be mounted on a front axle, causes 1 front tire to lock up (unpredictable which tire will do it as well). Only mount pinion brakes on rear axles.
setup the pinion brakes as a separate system, to serve as a emergency brake. They don't work well as a service brake...
Still the failure prone rubber design (just a backet added for when it fails).
Been searching trying to find a cheaper distributor for these metal ones with no luck. Simp, care to inform the rest of us on your supplier and testing results? Been awhile.
