Learned something new, I guess you'd have to introduce an idler gearbox on either the front or rear driveline to solve that piece of GM engineering!

Definitely would have been appreciated at the Battle of the Bulge, as I knew a few truck drivers (a lot, actually), that ran their CCKW's with only the top canvas on the cab. The Army figured that if you were comfortable, you probably weren't paying attention! I always...

Just for thoughts:
Why not see if an M35A2 Transfer will fit, at least then you can dispense with the sprag gears in the M135 transfer case that cause all sorts of problems in a rollback (if you are in "D", bad things happen). This should also get you the air shift on the...

Yes, and 239's in the 1930's, 1940's and 1950's. But you would be amazed how many working trucks made do with a 6 cylinder, or before the mid-1930's, with a 4. Most farmers and contractors did not normally pay the extra $$$ for a V-8 in a truck that was going to be going 45...

Underpowered compared to what, an M37? We forget that most working pickups back then weren't generally built with V-8's or for speed, but for hauling, so the stock M715 was in no ways underpowered. We are used to overpowered toy pickups today, but few of them are beat to...

Gents:
The M715 gets a very bad rap, unjustly, for lack of power, but you have to remember most real pick up trucks were not built for power or speed back then, but for really hauling stuff. Most civilian trucks today (pickups) do very little real hauling in their lives...

Unimog drivers who have travelled over 500 miles on a trip are a rare hardy breed, like the truck, slow capable dependable and not as but sore as on a deuce!:D

I always liked the SEE, but for any road trips either a stock cargo S404.114/115 or better a Unimog U1300L with ultra high speed axles, as they ride better and are less squirrelly on the road with or without the SEE's loader apparatus. I suspect its the short wheelbase that...

Except for deuces assigned in the desert for their working life, perhaps the questions should be better phrased "Where on a deuce won't you find rust?":|

Interestingly enough, the AM General M422A1 built for the US Marine Corps used a half elliptic spring that sat forward (or behind) and on top of the Swing arm pivot, thus limiting either upward or downward deflections. Other then lacking power, the M422A1 was virtually a...

Not in Houston, but up in Clarksville, Texas on US 82 is Curtis Weemes Towing. Mr. Weemes is an excellent deuce mechanic trained by Uncle Sam during the Vietnam War and does really goo work for reasonable charges. He has an M715 in his shop under repair of his own.

I wonder why the Army did not consider carrying the shut off valve forward on the G742 and 744 series trucks? Seems like a fairly good way to handle small battle damage to your brake systems.

I would think that civilianizing an M998 would degrade its value. If I came across such a conversion, the sales price would go down just as much as the parts and labor needed to restore the same to its mil-spec appearance.
However, if you had wanted the best off road...

As always the vaunted opinion makers will steer you very wrong.
Usually military and civilian dump trucks are shorter with the rear axle closer to the rear of the frame to support the dump mechanism hinge point and not overbalance the truck. I would deduct the weight of...

Most truck top, tarpaulin or boat top shops can re-stitch your top, also some really old auto upholstery guys were good at it back in the days of real convertibles......

Turbo multifuel or Normally Aspirated? If its NA your J pipe's wrong, if its turbo-ed, I suspect somebody either built a new exhaust pipe and got it wrong, or bent it against something! Note the bent ear on the fender inboard of your pipe, the pipe is supposed to exhit the...
CUCVRUS:
The C10 noted above was lightly used and the tranny went at about 45,000 miles and 1-1/2 years of age. It also had the fuel pump casting crack and leak at less then 60,000 miles, and the power steering pump bracket went at about 25,000 due to the weight on the front end of this...

Ah, The GM TH 400...world's least reliable truck transmission. I had one in a 1976 Chevy C10 Van, what a feeling to have all the FW clutches go and have to back her home in R!
It is very sad to see that most of the new car and truck builders have very little...
