I recognize that runway. 32 out of Eielson. I think it was about 3miles long for the tankers and RC, but I only used the last 1000ft in the base aero club 152s and 172s.
Holy smokes, sounds like you had an unfortunately eventful trip! I just drove some of that route in February, but in a non-MV. I hope to bring my deuce up there in the summer. The plan is to get it super-singled by the end of Weare, then head NW. Meanwhile, here's a video from my February...
I actually had it parked south of Socorro, NM (in my secret desert location ;-) ) for a couple of years. Now it's in NH to stay. I still have several antique Kristi-brand (non-MV) snowcats stored in NM that will also start makng their way east. They are much slower and probably top out at 20MPH...
Did not know the M114 APC was used by the USAF. Wikipedia says it was used by the Army in Nam, but didn't work out to well and was retired into the hands of civilian police departments. More here...

The link posted by 'runk' has the older stuff from '51-'71, but they are all single-page scans. So you can't search for text (except maybe with OCR software) and you can't download an entire issue in one shot.
Thanks for that hella-cool link. My Java didn't seem to be jiving with their Java, so I got frustrated and just copied the image links out of the source so I could download an issue en masse. Here is the result (mainly for us 'deucers')...

The Definitive Answer...
I assume the OP has long since resolved his issue, but since the thread goes on, here is what I will be using to troubleshoot my brake lights ('stoplights' in TM-speak).
They are not really needed here. They are to protect more sensitive components. If you had a digital circuit controlling the relay, the high voltage generated by the collapsing field during an off transition could damage the gate or transistor controlling the relay. But if you are just throwing...
If you hook it up with the polarity reversed, it will forward bias the diode and pretty much short plus to minus.
Here's a nice little blurb on automotive relays with pretty pictures...

I'm not sure if you are talking about a 'relay that will switch 24v' or one that is actuated with 24v.
If you were trying to actuate a 12V Bosch standard automotive relay with 24V, I'm surprised it smoked so quickly. I believe they draw less than 200mA, and at 24V it would still be less than...
Well, I made it there, but no MVs, so I left.
Instead, I bebopped on over to RGS20inophirs to see his '54 REO M35. I think I see a mudbogging bobber in his future...
Finally got a little time to scan one of the manuals that came with this cat. Had to reduce the PDF a bit to get it to upload here, but it still appears readable...except for the schematic on page 10-2.
I'd be up for it, but not sure how well the NDTs will do on a 'more challenging' trail. Maybe someone going to the rally will be able to hook me up with some super-singles or something.
