That's funny! A friend and I were just talking about TMs the other day...how the original hard copies must be collector items by now! I'm keeping my eye out for M939 series manuals for him. I told him about Steel Soldiers already...
I hope to find some Deuce and 939 series 5 ton manuals at a...
LOL that's hilarious, but not so hilarious what it's probably doing to your body...
Now, could you be blindfolded and transported 3 states away and recognize the smell of a garage with an old Deuce parked in there? LOL
A few I recently discovered, helping a friend on their trucks (I don't have my own...yet). Some aren't necessarily driving so much as they are just other advice:
-The bottom of a can of ether/starter fluid works for scraping ice off the cab windows.
-The clutch can take quite a bit of effort...
In the heat of summer, in Fairbanks! Being so far inland and with the long days, it can happen! Granted, it's also -40F in the winter there! It's funny, there's window A/C units everywhere you look!
Plus I also plan to be driving around in central California in the summer as well. Where it...
I also read a post recently about possibly sticking a window A/C unit in the bed of a Deuce with a hose going through the back of a cab, powered by a small generator or an inverter LOL. I might actually do just that, for driving in 105F temps (I'll have to do that LOL).
Interesting thread! What "model" is the propane-truck Deuce? (Propane tank instead of a fuel tank) That's the first Deuce I ever saw/rode in, and thought nada of it at the time...then 3 years later I get interested in owning a Deuce!
That's not a bad idea! Neither is a backup alarm, for all those parking lots...at least the house I might be living in (the one 2 hours away) has a circular driveway...one less place to have to back up...I can just pull in/pull out LOL. Same for most parking spaces as long as nobody is parked...
That's not a bad mentality either, saving some $$$ on the fuel (Especially if it's an A1) but still having the "fun" of driving it everywhere.
I think it also depends on your commute...mine while won't be too much city traffic...it'll probably be like 5% city driving, 50% freeway driving, 40%...
@JohnnyBM931A2:
Similarly, I know I'm not the only one either! For me $$$ is the biggest "roadblock" LOL. As someone here once put it in another thread where the OP was a teen (like myself) considering a 5 ton as a daily driver..."Quick run to the store? Five bucks right there!" Another reason...
I bet it'll be a hit at work! Go for it, 5 ton as a daily driver/commuter car! :)
Your specific encouragement definitely has me planning on doing just that as well, even if I start with a Deuce for this year...would like to get a M923 this time next year...
Great thread! Thoroughly enjoyed reading this one, as someone who plans on having a Deuce as a first/daily driver vehicle, and as someone who may get to drive one next week...
@Twisted60; I will echo what Fuzzy said...great truck!
"Bring earplugs"...absolutely! I have ridden in a Deuce once before (Not even at highway speed, mind you) and yeah, they are LOUD!
That's also a very good thought/possibility! 30a should be just fine for what I'll need. Stereo, small inverter, etc.
Another major electrical "addition" would be a block heater, for -40F Fairbanks, AK winters.
BTW might be going to pick a Deuce owner's brain in a couple weeks, and...
@Twisted60; sounds like a fun adventure for sure! Great looking truck, too!
@everyone else, yeah, that's why I'm thinking separate systems: Not killing batteries and because all the instrumentation would be difficult if not impossible to change over to 12v.
Interesting, military surplus! How fitting!
I'd like to set something up long term once I get a Deuce and/or M923. So I might have to do 12v/24v, with two battery banks and two alternators, or get a battery equalizer, or convert everything to 12v. (Anyone done that successfully on the 939...
