DodgedougAK, slightly off topic but where in SE Alaska? I also live in SE and plan to be living in Fairbanks during college...hopefully driving a Deuce up there too!
Another update: Should be getting pictures soon. Then I'll know what I'm getting into:). It may end up as mine in a trade for the boat equivalent of housesitting.
Ha. You pretty much inadvertently described my situation: MV, as a first vehicle, and torn between M35A2 or 939 series 5-ton. Possible acquisition of a '71 Deuce this June, but if not I may look for a 939 series 5 ton.
Thanks for the encouragement! I hope this can work out too. It sounded like whoever was mildly interested and backed out was a total idiot when it comes to mechanical anything, too. The way the current owner (My supervisor at one of my three jobs, I might add) related the phone conversation...
Update: He's still got it. Apparently someone called him about the truck about 2 weeks ago, talked him down to 400 bucks, then never called back. Current owner is going to take pictures and send them to me though, so I know what I'm getting into. Wish me luck! If I don't take it it may end up...
Yeah, that totally makes sense. Yeah, I can imagine, especially since most locals in any place drive at (At least IMO) ridiculously high speeds for unpaved roads. A grand per acre seems reasonable. One bizarre idea I've had for up there is to get a 5-ton (Preferably 939 series but whatever I...
OK good to know about the salt. When I visited on my post-secondary trip, there was snow on the ground but not really on the roads. Sand...now I know why many cars up there are just COVERED in dust.
Yeah, another good reason for a Deuce...water runs. I've also thought about the...
You guys just described how I feel about potentially owning a Deuce or 5 ton. I'd totally have either as a daily driver but parking would kind of suck. I'm almost 18 and going off to college, so the one I'd have to convince is the parking attendent at UAF (TB58, I'm sure you know that place)...
Yeah, I imagine the roads would be really iffy with NDTs on ice up there. I assume they salt the main freeways going in/out of Fairbanks, though?
Good to know about the well...so basically don't drink the tap water kind of setup? My first question for anything in that part of the world is...
Alaska? What area? I'm from Sitka/Port Alexander, and have spent time in other parts of Southeast. I'm planning on moving to Fairbanks for 4 years for college (Well, ideally a suburb like Pleasant Valley/Chena Hot Springs, and commuting in and out of Fairbanks, possibly a '71 Deuce potential...
Yeah, I forgot to ask what area of California. Lake/Napa counties by any chance? I know people (though not MV hobbyists) there. I spent much of my childhood and parts of my teen years in Atascadero, in San Luis Obispo (SLO, pronounced like "slow") county.
For me, driving a regular car, pickup, etc. to a storage yard to pick up my 5 ton to drive every day would almost be a deal-breaker, though I guess I'd have to deal with it if I lived in an HOA neighborhood and still wanted to own one.
It makes sense that driving it regularly would keep it in...
I thought you couldn't do the air brake exam with these 5-ton military trucks...am I wrong on that? Granted, I realize it may vary state by state...
If I could indeed to the CDL air brake test on one, I might consider getting one...although I may have a potential Deuce acquistion coming up in...
"Bust Out Another Thousand"
I can relate to that, being around boats a lot myself. "A boat is a hole in the water, which you're constantly trying to fill with money". Breakdowns, maintenance, etc.
But good luck! Go for it, just be cautious of what you're getting into.
Like everyone else has said (And I'm also the same age as you and in the same position)...lots of work to maintain but should be totally worth it! Insurance, parking, etc. could be issues. If you live in a neighborhood with a Homeowners' Association they might have issues with it being parked...
