Did they adjust them with a feeler gauge through the front of the drum ?
The Tm shows the top and bottom are different like the top being .020 and the bottom .010 clearance but it seems .020 on both seems to work good .
You might want to check the TM's for sure on the specs or maybe gimpyrobb...
And some of those changes were so they meet safety standards and passed the required crash test , that the HMMWV wouldn't pass.
Edit ; and this statement in the linked article shows how little the author really looked into these " all the automatics are GM four-speed 4L80Es."
Since early...
Unless it's a bad clutch or throw out bearing , there is a good chance it can be fixed without pulling it. He needs to get into the TM's and do some reading so he has a idea how it works , then hit the troubleshooting section . Then dig into it .
Edit ; When you start to take this apart , take...
I still would say the first thing to do is check the clutch like LiveFree suggested , then if that's good pull the top off the transmission and see what's going on inside . They are a really simple designed transmission to work on , between the TM's and SS support it should be a easy task.
Just because it has a u-joint doesn't it was designed to collapse , at best the u-joint could snap.
There is a reason they put slip joints on driveshafts to collapse with axle movement , the u-joint only compensates for angle.
The one thing I would look at is using air cylinders instead of hydraulic , the truck has easy access to air and 99% of commercial dump trucks that have power tailgates are air operated.
Well they never released the M151's even after the ROPS upgrade .
Now back to the original thread , a magazine article comparing them is hardly credible information . Just take it in the DMV , SOS or tax office who ever registers motor vehicles in your state and you will get laughed out of...
By the time the frame rusts through the rest of the truck isn't no better .
You want to waste your time working on rusting crusty junk , knock yourself out , even the backing plates on the axles were rusty . I'll just cut the plow off and move it to the next one.
