    complete 24v to 12v conversion

Just my opinion, disregard as you see fit.... but I see absolutely no benefit to converting to 12v. Reasons - 1) wiring is gauged for 24v. To get the same energy in 12v the amps double. Double amps needs heavier wire. 2) you can jump 24v from 12v vehicles by jumping one battery at a time...

Running a Welder on a Fermont MEP 831A 3KW Generator

I like the idea of a dedicated welding trailer instead of a small one on the wrecker. Not sure if there's room on the bed for a BB400 or similar. I haven't measured. I'm thinking it'd fit where the existing oxyfuel tank mounts are, but I'm not sure. If not, maybe a diesel trailblazer? But if...

Running a Welder on a Fermont MEP 831A 3KW Generator

If I'm sticking a welder on a wrecker its probably going to be a big blue 400 or similar and going to sit where the torch tanks do. It's going to be capable of fairly thick stick welding. I'm not going to cut or weld on the truck if I can help it at all. My general philosophy is that any mods...

    Adding a turbo to 1984 M936

I have a turbo on an NH250 (in an M818 - same engine) Some things to consider - The NH250 isnt designed for a turbo and lacks the oil squirters. Melting a piston is a concern. The wrecker weighs almost 40k empty. This means it's going to be a slug no matter what. The additional weight will...

    24 Volt LED Questions

You can change all the lights over to LED without converting to 12V. Yes, all lights are 24V. Not sure if you'll have flasher issues or not. No, you can't operate the crane while driving. If the PTO is engaged, the driveline is not.

First time owner; Paint Questions; Anyone in Houston?

Today I'm in KS. Next week I'll be in MO. First week of February I'll be in AZ. Sometime between now and then I have some welding to do in OK. So I'm all over. The tan deuce pictured has been operated for the last two years in NM. Paint still looks good. Rattlecan over CARC does well in...

First time owner; Paint Questions; Anyone in Houston?

For wheels, I'd advocate green, just for some contrast with the black tires. But there's nothing wrong with black either. I have a wrecker with faded paint like yours. I'm debating between housepaint or just rattlecan over the existing CARC. The harbor freight airless gun applies housepaint...

First time owner; Paint Questions; Anyone in Houston?

I've done CARC and I've done house paint. Takes 4 gallons for a cargo truck. House paint results are completely acceptable @ 1/10 the cost, and much easier to work with doing it yourself. Rustoleum rattlecan over faded CARC looks just fine, but the colors aren't quite an exact match, and...

How long is too long to let sit!

Here's some empirical evidence- While living in Tucson I had an M925. Mostly it sat in the driveway and was used as an air source for my plasma cutter once or twice a week. It got driven every two or three months and got filled up at that point. No issues. That same M925 was driven to KS. I...

How long is too long to let sit!

Tucson - condensation isn't remotely an issue. Just doesn't happen. A glass full of ice will melt completely and not get a drop on the outside. Moisture trap on air compressor doesn't get moisture in it. Air dryer on the truck sneezes dry. Bare steel left outside for months doesn't rust. I...

How long is too long to let sit!

In your climate the primary problems would be rat-things infesting it, and rubber parts drying out. Parked in the shade, with no drain on batteries and you should be good for at least a couple months at a time and probably more like a couple years. Starting it and running it with no load...

    HMMWV 3-speed reliability

I've driven my basic M998 from KS to GA and back, and multiple trips between Washington KS and Hannibal MO. No problems. My impression is that the 3speed transmission is just fine as far as reliability goes, but the people dont like them because of the limitations on top speed.

    Houston Title company

TX recently passed legislation explicitly allowing for titling HMMWVs, to include the ones with the off road stamp. You should have no problems. Edit- https://www.steelsoldiers.com/threads/titling-in-texas.192785/

Will disconnecting the 12V cable mess things up?

Sample size of multiple trucks over multiple years and tens of thousands of miles says no problem.

LMTV as an RV in California

Learning the unknowns are what make it interesting and entertaining for me. I've posted the details of many of my trips. I presume you've read them... Never once have I had to have a vehicle towed by a wrecker service. I've yelled for help a few times when my number of blown tires exceeded my...

LMTV as an RV in California

Depends on your tolerance for risk, and what you consider fun. I've done it a bunch with the 939series platform . I enjoy it. You do have to figure distance into the cost of a vehicle. Closer vehicles are worth more. Have to compare cost-as-in-your-driveway. $1/mile factor for distance to...

Way Ahead for Kansans to on road title MV stamped Off Road Use

Culture war. The single biggest determinant as to whether you have a problem at any DMV isn't even what the law states. The single biggest variable is whether the person behind the counter thinks you should be able to own it. Those in petty positions of power love a nice complex grey...

New Deuce Tires & Wheels Question...

I Those are LMTV rims. Suitable for use on 939series 5tons and 809series 5tons. I have never seen an adapter plate that will let them work on a deuce. The adapter plates I have seen for using a 10lug wheel on a deuce works with the 10lug MRAP rims.

New Deuce Tires & Wheels Question...

14.00's won't clear due to space between the rear tandem. 5ton wheels are 10bolt and to my knowledge adapter plates dont exist. 395's are as big as you can go on a 6x6 deuce. The last one we converted, we sourced adapter plates off Ebay. To my knowledge Peashooter is no longer making them.
