I'l hazard a guess that you're talking about the driveshaft flange here................. Does it look like this (more or less-the picture is from a deuce)? If so, it won't spin unless the vehicle is moving. So your impact wrench will do a nice job of removing the nut.

It will beat the heck out of the leading edge of the hood. And if it were to fall..................... the liability makes me shudder.

patracy is right. Th switch is wearing out, requiring more pressure to close. Air operated switch is a nice upgrade.
