m16ty just directed me to this thread, from another I'd found while searching for info on level-winders/tensioners. Wondering how much work it might be to modify and adapt a level-winder/tension from another application. Thing is, I don't really know anything about these. Only seen a few pics...
Is there a level-winder/tensioner for the deuce winches? If not, what about adapting one from another application? I'm just trying to figure out what kind of winch I'm going to get for Mah Deuce and how/where I'm going to mount it.
I can think of lots of places where it would be nice to have 6WD, even in a gigantic RV that's never really going to go too far off-road. I really don't see what the big deal is. Plenty of people build vehicles like these entirely from scratch. Anything that doesn't suit his needs is easy enough...
Thanks. That's funny, I think mah deuce is a gigantaur rig. haha. Seriously thought about building on an M36 chassis, and then a stretched 5-ton, but decided against it as I really do want to be able to take it pretty far off the beaten path.
Maybe I missed it, but I don't think the OP was asking for this kind of input. He seems to know what he's looking for, and just wants some help finding it. So he's planning on using it to do something it was never intended to do. So what? What's the problem with that? Is it ruining a collectible...
Well, with smaller trucks, it's generally accepted that it's desirable to have a little bit wider track-width up front. If the rear track-width is wider than the front, it tends to make trucks understeer. I'm basing this on what I know about desert race trucks and CORR-type short-track race trucks.
Oh, for sure. I'm building an enclosed trailer that will be configured like a mobile workshop, and I'm mounting all my tools on receiver hitches. You know, things like vises and tubing notchers and whatnot. So I'm going to have receiver hitches all over the place.
Wonder how many feet of wire/rope they carry? Prolly nowhere near the 200-250ft that you can spool-up on the stock winch, and that sure would be nice in some situations.
Sure would be a lot more versatile. Light enough that I could build a custom receiver hitch-type mount for it, and use it on the front or back of Mah Deuce, move it between vehicles, etc. Lot less weight hanging out there over the front-end too, although, I guess I might not even keep it mounted...
Have you guys seen this? Impressive specs, and it weighs less than 150lbs. I'm sure it costs a lot more than the stock PTO winch, but it's got me thinking...
Just talked to Ballistic, and they said parts should ship by this wednesday. Evidently their laser table was down, and had to be serviced, so my order got delayed. Sorry for the hold-up to those of you that have been waiting. I'll post-up as soon as I receive them, and will be able to start...
Congratulations. I've got a fresh LDS in a crate too, waiting to be swapped into Mah Deuce. Good idea about starting it up in the crate. Think I might go ahead and just do that. Don't mean to be nosey, but what are rebuilt LDS engines going for these days? What about pulled/running LDT's?
