James, that is an M129A2C, right? I thought the M127s were flat bed trailers. If your trailer is indeed an M127, I guess I just learned something new! :-D
Lance, I have wondered the same thing...and especially on deuces where it looks like there might be an inch or two between the tire and the fender! Most guys who have them have commented on how they perform off-road, but their trucks are mainly empty.
Chris, you are doing a great job. I am sure the project often looks and feels intimidating. Keep your head up. You are restoring a truck like few of us in the hobby have!
Bob, do you need any help getting your field back in order? I would think some type of roller might be necessary to flatten the ruts. I would not worry much about the grass as field grass will come back, but the ruts need to be flatted or else you will have rumble strips there permanently...
Here are two potential drawbacks:
First, are you concerned with accuracy (i.e., accurate in so far as the military used the rims on this truck)? If so, that would be a drawback as the HEMTT rims, as the name states, were made for the HEMTT. If historical accuracy is not important, and you are...
I realize you were not TRYING to be offensive. I don't believe I took offense to your post as much as I felt a need to respond because you quoted me and suggested that people (I took that to mean me) who did not agree with paying this price really had no clue (I believe you said that we did...
You sound like you are the wise one and you are talking to a bunch of green hobbyists that just started out who try to cobble together pennies to afford that rusted out deuce. Trust me when I say I understand what you are saying about the GL auctions...and the DRMO auctions before them. I have...
It might have been the nicest tractor you have personally seen...assuming you inspected it. However, CUCVFAN is right...there have been nicer trucks. I suppose we are splitting hairs as all of the rebuilt tractors are nice. The price is what shocked me. Daniel, as you said, he paid a lot of...
The M818, while nice, went way too high. The same truck has been bringing between $3000 and $4800 for over a year now. Agreed...too rich for me, too. It would have been a nice get for like $4K.
Peter, you can get these off of any residue M809 series truck as they appear to have been standard on those trucks (at least every truck I have seen had them on it). Contact John Winslow in Halifax, NC (252-883-2509). He probably has a residue M809 sitting around from which you could pull...
James, I know that GL calls the M871 a lowbed trailer, but the M870 is actually the lowbed. The M871 is like an M127 as far as I can tell. I don't know the answer to your question, though.
I wonder if the NHC250s originally came in black straight from the factory. With the M939A2s, you can tell an early from a late motor by the color. The M939A2s were manufactured from 1989 through 1992 and I have never seen a tan motor in a truck that was pre-1991. However, all of the 1992...
Ian, are you going to have at the jungle juice again? I am coming on Saturday so save some energy. You seemed to blow your load on the first night at Aberdeen! :-D Looking forward to seeing you and your buddy with the bag pipes.
You can tell the date of manufacture by looking at that data plate. I saw a data plate on a motor that looked new that said 1973...and upon further review, I saw a data plate on the bell housing that indicated that the motor was rebuilt in the 90s. The motor could still be new I suppose and...
Almost all of the motors that I have seen have been BLACK. I have seen a few that were 383 CARC green, but these almost exclusively were rebuilds. Even most of the rebuilds that I have seen have been black. I have never seen an NHC250 in Cummins tan like some of the later motors.
