gringeltaube, your posts are most informative and give me the impression you have spent many years with these trucks. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us and for posting photos of your work.
Saludos y gracias,
Rick
This discussion can be made over any single truck component: engines, axles, cabs and so on.
A $1500 truck would cost $30,000 or more if you bought it in used pieces from the classifieds.
It is a true miracle these trucks sell so cheap from auction. Wish it would never end......

I have never seen a multiple engine set up, like you may see at a tractor pull.
Ignoring my ignorance :-D, how do you couple the motors to work in unison?
I suppose it would be easiest to run both motors at the same time, throttling them in sync. The alternative would be to have the "secant"...
zalora,
I recommend you seek out a local owner of the type of truck you are interested in. Ask them to drive it and to explain their experience in ownership.
Welcome to this site.

Nope, seals are fine! There must be another application out there where the seal retainer is different on everything except the outside diameter.
The reason I asked about the 5 ton axle is the inner thrust washer was wrong on that side as well. The washer has a larger internal diameter. My...
Quick question for folks with both 2 1/2 ton and 5 ton front axle experience:
Are the 5 ton and 2 1/2 ton axle housings similar? Or are there different 2 1/2 ton front axles out there with slight inner seal differences?
I found mismatched inner seal retainers inside my 2 1/2 ton front axle...
Welcome to the site! If you part it out, won't that look worse than a complete truck sitting in the yard?
Parting it out is a lot of work, especially if you are aiming to break even. I say enjoy it for a while, get to know it and if you want it gone, sell it.
Rick
The first side comes off fine, but the second side gets too bound up with all that weight on the rod, making the "lift, tilt and drop" movements almost impossible.
I got both sides off with the rod ends still attached, but I'll separate them for re-assembly.

I'm not being a smart ass, but the times when I experienced going from brake boost to no boost, the feeling was a rock hard pedal.
Had more to do with the sudden change than the actual apply pressure.
Will the Op please chime in on this?
Rick
Man, thanks for the pics! Whenever I see a junk collection like that, I want to go out and scoop them up and make them run again!!! I would love to own a tracked vehicle of any sort!!! hahaha!!
I guess the reality would be different!
Rick
I have ZERO experience, and may change my opinion in the future, but.....
The concept of having adjustable tire pressures compels me to vote yes, retain the system.
I live in a rural area an hour from pavement roads and access to services. The constant airing up and down of large tires in...
Good fun! I saw puffs of smoke coming outa the stack! I love the feel of a long wheel base slide!!! Talk about committed!
How about some third gear figure eights???
Well done and keep it up!
Rick
Thanks to all for this piece of inspiritation! While I have worked on solid front drive axles before, I have never worked on such big pieces. Thankfully my ancient tool collection covered the big nuts and bolts encountered.
My addition to this thread is to share my new awareness: In spite of...
I agree: running hydraulics opens up all kinds of possibilities for powering winches and other equipment. If I owned one truck and was going to keep it awhile, that is how I'd modify it.
Why not consider an electric winch? The power cables can be permanently mounted with connectors at the...
GR,
On the tank side box, I recommend you build the mounting brackets for the box so that you can slide the box in and out for gaining access to the fuel pump in the tank.
Just put a few bolts in sideways to secure the box. Then you can remove the box for when it's time to get to the in tank...
