I didn't realize this forum existed until now. Do these eventually get uploaded to the TM section up top? Anyway here's a service manual I found for the AT545 and AT1545, which are used in the M35A3.
Thank you for that @tobyS . I listened to my truck shifting in my sound recording and I thought I heard the 4th gear re-locking.
Here's a sound recording of my truck starting at an intersection and running through the gears:
You can clearly hear the shift into 3rd gear, then 3rd gear...
The transmission is supposed to unlock between 3rd and 4th gear. And thank you for the 4L80E mention. That's a pretty common transmission outside HMMWV applications, I think, so it shouldn't be hard to get those parts!
Parades were definitely lacking in my area this year, but having the newborn would've forced me to miss them anyway! I hope to contribute some pics to this thread next year :) Looking at all these pics has me looking forward to running my truck in parades :driver:
Were full air brakes a thing when these trucks were designed? Maybe the military guys didn't trust the technology and wanted to stick with powered hydraulics. The CCKW before it had vacuum-assisted hydraulic brakes.
I'm really curious about this. I wouldn't think an impeller would be necessary for pre-cleaning/dust ejecting because I always thought exhaust vacuum alone would be good enough. But then again I don't know much about precleaning air and dust ejecting.
A quick Google search shows that a rotor...
I don't see anything in that picture that would be making that sound. I haven't opened my air cleaner yet, so I'm assuming it's just an empty canister when there's no filter in it. It goes right to the turbo, so I'm thinking it's a turbo-related noise. But then again, those noises usually...
I might have the answers for a couple things:
5) Bad steering box seal perhaps. They do contain oil despite not being powered. I don't know if they can be rebuilt or what a replacement costs.
6) I'm guessing a bad 1st gear bearing. My dad's M37 knocked in 3rd gear and it was a bad bearing...
I was in contact with a guy who can 3D print metal automotive parts, including brake components. He actually specializes in antique car restoration. Perhaps if there's enough interest here we should engage him?
I wouldn't do over 45 MPH in any of my trucks no matter the age, unless it was a HMMWV. I'd just enjoy going "slow". After all, it gets more looks that way as it's a lot harder to get a good look at a speeding bullet of a car :p
All the 5-tons from the M39 onward have power steering stock, but also had an air-assisted hydraulic brake system like the M44 deuces. It wasn't until the M939 5-tons that full air brakes came stock.
That truck looks like an M51 5-ton dump with an air brakes mod. It makes me wonder if it...
When I pull my wheels apart, I'm going to clean them, paint them, and replace all the seals, possibly the tire stems and turret valves as well.
These combat rims seem to have two main failure points: the valve stem grommet, and the o-ring between the rim halves. Properly installing the seals...
