    well thats not fun

I'm thankful that the person I bought my M1031 from decided to keep it together and sell it to me instead of using parts for his rockcrawler. On the other side of things, I did purchase an M1010 last year and gutted it to build a Suburban. I think at this point as time goes by, they will...

New to site and the world of military vehicles.

I like the M1009 but it has two major flaws both of them being 10 bolts stuffed with 3.08 gears. Get a real truck with 8 lugs, match the tire size to how fast you need to go :)

optimizer long block - hummer 24V or cucv 24v

I hate to say it but this is the classic military truck debacle when it comes to trying to make one work in a civilian life. I am sliding my M1010 running gear under a Suburban and finally just said screw it with the 24v system. I have a matching M1031 and like the 24v system, certainly wouldn't...

optimizer long block - hummer 24V or cucv 24v

Can I ask why trying to stick with a hybrid system? Why not just go 24v starting/charging system and run the truck stuff off a 12v powersupply? I would imagine the truck part would draw very little on a 12v source if you changed out the headlights to 24v bulbs and run them off of relays. That...

    Drivers side front sag??

Congrats on finding the problem, glad it all worked out. I have not sent my springs out to be re-arched at all. With the age, I just went with new lift springs. I will say that my USA made 1 ton rear springs for my M1031 where big $$$ but worth every penny. They ride awesome! I'm also glad that...

    Drivers side front sag??

I was thinking that a tape measure works for that much sag because they typically measure down to a sixteenth increment. Works well on a flat surface too but I guess you can interpret that either way depending on if you believe in the Earth being flat or round...

    Drivers side front sag??

I'm in the process of converting a C20 Suburban chassis to 4wd and the front crossmember where the brakelines go across had two rivets which loosened up and oblonged the holes. I would have never of caught it because it looked perfectly fine if I didn't pop the rivets out. Stuff happens...

    Drivers side front sag??

Shocks hold zero weight, most likely a spring issue. Grab a dimension from the bumpstop to the axle tube on both sides and see if it's off. I'm not sure about the whole unibody thing. The frame is what holds the vehicle straight. The body on a Blazer or Suburban holds relatively straight and...

best way to level 1986 m1009

So you are telling me that if I slam my hand above the frame rail and under the body panel near a mount, then compare it to the other side I can use that data to see from a preliminary standpoint if the body is leaning on one side? Maybe apply that same technique to an axle tube and bumpstop as...

best way to level 1986 m1009

A two inch difference in one area you will easily be able to see with a tape or using your hand. Again, not building race cars here. You specifically have a tendency to write giant paragraphs filled mostly with 99% nonsense and maybe 1% of help. You can have a professional look at it but...

best way to level 1986 m1009

OK, so usual suspects writing paragraphs of useless ramblings that really offer no assistance... To the OP, did you take any measurements or photos so someone here can actually steer you in the right direction?

best way to level 1986 m1009

Exactly! Why do we have to turn this into space shuttle engineering??? A few pictures would probably work because you can most likely see something odd with the frame, body to frame dimensions, or an axle close to a bumpstop to determine something that far out of whack. If you do have a flat...

    bad 14 bolt

Yeah...I would vote to that the Detroit in your axle is probably worth more than $100. My M1031 has a clutch style LSD. Not the best unit out there on the market but better than open.

best way to level 1986 m1009

I would say lets just pump the brakes here and take a couple of quick measurements with a tape before we start doing frame straightening or lift kit installations. I feel IMO all of that is not good advice since no one has established an actual reason for the lean yet. Some pictures in key areas...

Did you replace with new springs or used? You may want to take some measurements to see if the frame or body is lower on that side. You may have body mount issues if the springs are OK. Again, compare dimensions from one side to the next to see where the sag is occurring.

    Metro Detroit Mechanic Needed

These trucks are super easy to learn how to wrench on. Your biggest challenges outside of basic mechanics is learning the diesel fuel system/glow plugs and 24v charging system. Both of which are basic in nature but probably something you will have to read up on before tackling. For the most part...

    Metro Detroit Mechanic Needed

I would highly recommend learning how to wrench on your own rig or be prepared to shell out some big dollars to get it reliable. It isn't super difficult work but lots of hours for any technician.

    Fuel tank sending unit

When I replaced my sending unit years ago I remember it being an additional feed but it does not go the to the bottom of the tank. So yes, you could run a fuel fired heater or drain most of the tank using this line. My unit just had a rubber cap on the sending unit metal line on top of the tank.

    question on 1031 pricing ..

I agree, finding one unmolested in clean shape with all of the equipment including a functioning generator is fairly rare. I paid $6000 for one sight unseen and I still had to do a lot of mechanical work to make it reliable. Not to mention redo some of the generator stuff. I wouldn't even think...
