Someone (local fire dept) did that to the wrecker bed that was on my M543 - they cut off the rear winch and put on a 5th wheel pad - modded the rear wheel covers and then built mounts for the crane to be stowed forward... needless to say I am replacing it with a standard bed - mostly for the 45K...
Haven't got a true drawing together but the basic info is as follows...
The 5-ton rims get the bolt pattern parted off 0.250" above the lock ring flange.
Then turn a 0.075" deep by 14.875" diameter counter bore into the shell - this will register the center. Edge break all surfaces.
The...
Thanks guys - Hot rod deuce could you post or PM me the info for the spring shop - thanks.
Gringletaube - My other plan was to add some steel to the inboard edges of the perches to prevent the spring from falling out however it doesn't address the keeper on the top... anyways I was going to do...
Because the stock springs overlap onto the axles all the way you can spread the rears a bit - (max 4") and the tips of the springs are still more than halfway on the axle button.

Drivelines and good timing
Some of the machining pictures from choping the drivelines...
Also it was good to get it done while the weather turned to crap since we had to deliver 3 Bergen BRM cylinder heads to the Northern Eagle... the 2wd cabover flat bed was not going to do it!
It's nice...
Hey guys - long time coming but I got my 1400's mounted up on the deuce over the weekend... I made a set of extended control arms and plan on adding a bit to the spring perch later if needed - so far it looks like it won't be required...
I also had to cut 1.25" out of the step and support to...
Hey Doug - good to have ya; I am currently out of state... fixing even bigger diesel stuff at the Swan Island shipyard in Portland - but I am in the Seattle area most of the year - if you are looking for parts ever PM me and I can give you a number of a local guy - just don't want to flood him...
Yeah - my issue is more or less a time limited one - I don't have enough time to work on my own projects let alone work on items for sale...
And yes the liability is a concern...
Likewise - sorry to hear that... I have sufficent OD iron at the moment, unless someone wants to bequeath a hemtt wrecker, WWII half track, WWII scoutcar or a sherman my way... Otherwise I'll keep plugging away with what I have...
I think the Puget Sound Military Vehicle Collectors Club has...
Yep about 10" shy - it took a 28" swing to do the shells... the other option is to do it like this with a cnc (or rotary table - if you're chronically old school) - but even that was a tight fit...
I did 3 like this before finding a lathe big enough... 2 insert center-cutting indexable 1"...
Thanks guys - I get kinda maniacal when working on my own stuff... Ok at work too - probably why they send me out to fix the random crap no one else wants to touch in the field...
Was never intending to make them commercially - No idea what I'd charge - probably be way too obnoxious once I...
wsucougarx - where are you in WA - I have some property up in Hobart that we could work out a deal if you're interested - it is in the cedar river watershed so I have 17 neighbors in a 3 mile radius in all directions... just a thought - I have my duece and m543 in ballard right now ;) One at...
Thanks guys - I tend to get an idea and want to do all the work myself so it always adds the the skill set even if it takes more time...
If work didn't tie me up so much with OT and travel I would make more progress - but I nip at it a little at a time...
I was going to make some pockets to weld in the floor to use the standard swivel d-rings for lifting heavy machinery, or as mentioned before a chain pigtail - my jeep weighs in at 5k and there is no way I would use anything less than a 3" strap per corner or 5/16" chain and a chain binder to...
If you look at the other post you can see what they were made from - it is the standard 10 bolt budd 5-ton combat rim that I recentered with M35 parts...
So the short answer for where to get them is from your local machine shop/fabricators place; I can give you machining dimensions if you're...
Another helpful addition - tired of pounding in studs the caveman way - or having the rim try to hop into my lap off the press - I built a quickie puller bar - simple - it is just two deep nuts - the upper is 5/8x18 and the lower is 3/4x16 so it will pull both size studs used on the 5-ton...
Just a quick pictorial of how to mount up a double beadlocked rim...
Corkscrew in the beadlock and bolt it up; position it centered in the rim; apply the o-ring to the rim shell and lower the tire over it; place the lock ring and start the securing hardware with molykote or antisieze on the...
I know this has been a long time coming but here is the finished product; if anyone would like machining print information on how to do this please let me know - there are several variations on this theme as far as the placement of the center which affects the scrub and clearance of the tires...
