    Dark Seas M1008 Project

Appreciate the insight. I don't believe the transmission itself is leaking, but I do worry the transfer case is cracked somewhere. Going to pull the transfer case in the next few days and inspect it before I order a kit to refresh the seals and bearings. Maybe I'll get lucky and she just needs...

    Dark Seas M1008 Project

I may have just had an epiphany thinking about what I found during the cleanup. I found a plastic baggie with copper washers that came with the injectors. If the injectors aren't seated properly, that might be a MASSIVE issue causing the problems I'm seeing..... I'm going to have to take off the...

    Dark Seas M1008 Project

Some progress made over the weekend. 1. Smoking/motor/IP issue: I got a siphon and sucked some diesel out of the fuel tank (about 2 gallons), it didn't look cloudy. The fuel looked good. I set some in a powerade bottle on my toolbox to settle for a day see if I get any separation. I'm pretty...

    Dark Seas M1008 Project

I mean it is good to check. I will see if the IP rebuild shop also does injector pop testing see if they can tell me if they're good.

Can do. Will pick up a new siphon when I get home and try that out. Here's the evil rat: My desk chair is a lost cause, it's been broken for years though so I don't really care. He loves chaos.

    Dark Seas M1008 Project

There's a possibility. I was going to siphon out some fuel from the tank to see what it looked like last weekend, but my rabbit decided he was going to help himself to some plastic and ate like 5 holes in the siphon. Edit to mention: I say possibility because from spring-fall 2022 the truck sat...

    Dark Seas M1008 Project

Okay, here are the adjustments and videos. The links go to YouTube videos I posted. 1. Pre-adjustment. IP alignment photo: Looks spot on, maybe a hair toward the driverside. I took this VIDEO while we got her fired up and were keeping throttle on her to keep the motor alive. You can see the...

    Dark Seas M1008 Project

Got it. Fabbed up a thick 2ga ground I had in the bed of the truck from the old battery wiring. Worked perfect and no more smoking. Amazing. Got her fired up and warmed up. Let her sit and idle for a few minutes then began making IP adjustments. IP adjustments smoothed out my idle by about...

    Dark Seas M1008 Project

Think I had a eureka moment at work thinking about my ground situation. I don't recall a cable going from negative bus to frame, likely why a jumper cable from starter to frame allowed my GEN1 light and starter to work again - I don't think I had any other ground path from motor to batteries...

    Dark Seas M1008 Project

Interesting. I had a tattered ground strap here I replaced (cab to intake stud). I replaced it with a 10 or 12ga wire I had in the shop leftover and we screwed it back down. I also have a loose end from the wiring harness there I wrote a "?" For because when I attached it to the intake stud (it...

    Dark Seas M1008 Project

So the saga continues. I go to the shop and prep for getting the truck to idle and making IP adjustments. Pushed the truck back out of the garage, set up fans to blow the exhaust out so I can let her idle. Fire extinguisher ready. Charge the batteries to 12.7V each. Sit down turn the key, the...

    Dark Seas M1008 Project

Just found the mother of all tutorials on 6.2 IP timing adjustments... 6.2/6.5 Diesel Stanadyne DB 2 Injection Pump Timing Methods from Tim's teachable moments on youtube. I've gotta go to a wedding this weekend and travel Thursday/Friday. I hope the fiance doesn't get too upset with me if I go...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

    1. Fired the truck back up for the first time in months to take a video of my motor smoking issue. Posted the video on my rebuild thread for opinions, gonna send it to the guy likely gonna rebuild my IP in the coming weeks. Would love some more opinions on that if anyone has a minute to check...

    Dark Seas M1008 Project

I agree. I will have to go back and listen to the video myself. I took it but I was trying to get the tailpipes and motor before we got smoked out.

    Dark Seas M1008 Project

Here's the VIDEO I promised. Check it out and tell me what you think. We don't think it's a fuel issue we think it's an IP issue. We will try and advance the timing a hair to see if that helps. Hope the video is enough, I had to cut filming short and cut a fan on, we were dying.

    Dark Seas M1008 Project

Got her fired back up stock with no adjustments made yet. Will post the video link as soon as it uploads to YouTube so y'all can hear her. Edit to mention we had to cut it short we were getting utterly murdered by smoke. We didn't get her idling but she fired up after about 3 tries since...

    Dark Seas M1008 Project

Copy that. Let me run a few tests tomorrow and catch some videos of the startup, idling, smoking, sounds, etc. and what adjustments do (IP advance, drain and fill fuel tank, etc.). I'll post some video links this weekend y'all can check out and see what you think. I wish I had the old video...

Adding an aftermarket coolant gauge to an M1008

Thanks adf, One last (likely stupid) question.. looking at the TMs, you replaced the drilled plate out for item #6 here, correct?

Adding an aftermarket coolant gauge to an M1008

Love the fitment, super clean. I think it'd be a worthwhile upgrade (especially if I pull the intake back off to get the IP out here soon). Thanks for the link! Any clue which gauge you went with? I'm finding them anywhere from $20 to like $100, electric or mechanical? I know mechanical gets a...

Adding an aftermarket coolant gauge to an M1008

So you're saying just ditch the concept of using the GP temp sensor spot at the back of the block? Or that'd be viable, just put a decent gauge on it for a good reading?
