Rebuilding Hydraulic Motor on my M936A1

The hydraulic motor on my M936A1's hoist is leaking hydraulic fluid. As far as I can tell from the TMs, it's considered a disposable piece since I haven't found documentation of internal repairs or internal repair parts. Have any of y'all had good luck opening up one of these gear pump style...

    Unplanned site outage

Cool. I'm following you there now. Just beware: sometimes I'm NSFW on Twitter.

    anything 1009's are notorious for?

I forgot to mention the standard wisdom for the M1009 and its relatives: If it's electrical, clean it. If it's rubber, replace it. I also have developed a deep and abiding hatred for the rear window mechanism. I don't mind the power train at all. I haven't driven my CUCVs much yet, but it's...

    anything 1009's are notorious for?

AHA! This is the thread that I was replying to at the moment that the site went down! Ok, hopefully this doesn't crash the site again: I'd say electrical problems, especially in the instrument cluster where a bad bulb contact can make parts of the truck quit working in unexpected ways.

    Unplanned site outage

Agreed, fully. I would prefer something that is a good, happy compromise between the less-computer-savvy folks and the wired-up-all-the-time folks. I don't know what options exist, though.

But you never call me... :-(

    Unplanned site outage

Maybe we could use something like a SteelSoldiers channel on some existing chat site, such as an IRC server? I don't know if web-based front-ends are available for IRC. My vote would be for a chat feature which has broad compatibility with PCs, tablets and smartphones, accessible from either a...

    Unplanned site outage

That would be great! If it's non-Flash-based (so I could sign in from my iPad), that would be even better!

    Unplanned site outage

Gack! FB! I dread FB. I was active there for a while, but got fed up with their repeated privacy rule changes and nuked my account. Later some friends brow-beat me into signing up again, so I did so under a fake name and have about 2-3 friends there. And I almost never actually log in. You kids...

    Unplanned site outage

Hooray! The site is back! It went down right as I was posting a reply, and then I found out it was back up mere seconds ago when I got a subscribed thread email. I was already going through withdrawal 15 minutes into the outage. Hey, is there some other forum or twitter hashtag or something...

    Trucks On Michelin 14.00R20s

Bob H said above that the rear axles are too close together.

    Trucks On Michelin 14.00R20s

My M936A1 is on Goodyears. Is there any particular reason why I might prefer Michelins vs. Goodyears if and when I single out my M923?

    For you Electrical GuRu's

I'm curious about what systems that power supply went with. It is WW2 vintage. I've asked about it on a military radio collector mailing list that I'm on, so maybe an answer will come up there.

    Wrecker Oil Can Bracket

The brackets on the back of the gondola are for fire extinguishers. There's another bracket inside the gondola for an oil can.

What to do with a MK48 cab?

The GL pictures show a shaft with some U joints dangling underneath. Would that be a steering shaft, mechanically coupled to the steering wheel? Does anybody know the dimensions of the pads underneath that appear to be destined to sit on frame rails? Why am I asking? It's not like I'd ever...

    Replacing M936A1 Wrecker Hoist Cable

Ah, I almost forgot. I have some questions for you rigging experts. Is it OK to use anti-seize compound on the sleeve threads when I assemble the clevis end? About how much torque is appropriate for the sleeve? Are there any other details I should know about? Should I untwist each of the six...

    Replacing M936A1 Wrecker Hoist Cable

The new clevis end arrived faster than I expected. I was about $83 with shipping.

I have an M1008 that's not dear to me...

What to do with a MK48 cab?

Cool, I'll read through that thread today. Am I going to be sorry that I didn't bid on one of those zillions of M931 tractors yesterday for its frame and powertrain?
