Yeah, that is pretty clanky!
I'm about to head out to run errands, and I plan to stop by a muffler shop to see if they can make me up a straight piece of pipe with the right flange on one end. It's not a simple flare; instead, there's a separate flange welded on for the coupling to the muffler...
A friend of mine told me about something he witnessed once. He was in a parking lot, and saw a couple guys jumpstarting a beat-up old compact pickup. Cables? Who needs cables? They simply took another car battery, turned it upside-down, and set its terminals down on the terminals of the dead...
Yeah, it'd probably make a great home tower, too. I'm presently hanging my dipole from a GRA-4 mast at around 40'. I made new rigging with dacron rope, swaged-on loop ends, stainless hardware, and screw-in ground anchors. It's survived some really strong wind storms without any problems. I'd...
I googled the number, and got an answer of 115 feet.
I wonder what the guying requirements are, and whether one person can put it up alone? Yeah, google will probably answer that, too, but I'm lazy.
Yes, the GVWR should be 31,500 or so. I suspect that whoever filled out the SF97 got GVW and GVWR confused, as that number is around what the empty truck might weigh with a full tank, a few extra coats of paint, and so forth.
BTW, in case the pictures weren't clear enough: The flapper isn't stuck open because of interference from the pipe; it's stuck open because that's the natural angle it wants to hang. I just slapped it on there with the clamp a bit crooked for the picture. It was raining, and I didn't want to...
Thanks, but that won't work. The end of the stock exhaust pipe on the M923 points slightly downwards, and this particular flapper is balanced such that it wants to hang straight up and down. Moving or modifying the clamp doesn't affect that.
Ok, here comes some CA Vehicle Code:
Historical Vehicle plate requirements are in CVC 5004(a).
Weight fee exemption is in CVC 9400(d).
I haven't found the truck scale exemption that I remember yet... Do you think I'm wrong about that? Or has it possibly changed in the last decade? Or is it...
I used to, but I'll need to find it again. I don't know yet if the CVC section numbers changed recently along with the PC numbers. :-|
Let me see if I can find it... It's been about a decade since I studied the CVC carefully.
I'll see if I can get the videos to work for me... I'm on a cell phone for my internet connection! :(
I think that my tail pipe bend is only about 90 degrees, but the whole stack including the muffler is tilted a bit away from vertical. That tilt is what puts the end at the wrong angle for the...
I'm starting to warm up to the straight stack, especially since I can try it and switch back if I change my mind. I may also put the end up higher than the stock curved pipe. With the flared joint at my muffler outlet, it'd be easy to pull the stack off to reduce height. I still need to verify...
It really depends on what state you're in. The federal standards apply to commercial use only, but state laws aren't all written that way. In CA, the required license class is based on the type of vehicle being driven, even if it's not being used commercially. I can go on in a lot more detail...
I had to head outside to get something from my daily driver anyway, so I took a quick peek at the 5-ton. Yup, a nice flared fitting just after the muffler. So, it'd be easy for me to replace the curved piece with a straight one, and keep the curved piece in case I ever change my mind. Maybe I'll...
Just yesterday I got the possibly silly idea of taking a small travel trailer, cutting off the drawbar and axle, then securing it in the bed of a 5-ton cargo truck. I had previously contemplated converting a commo shelter into a camper box with shower/bed/toilet/stove/sink, too. In either case...
