For brake upgrade theres 3 options that I debated:
1. Dual circuit conversion and add pinion brakes to the rear axles for a strong parking brake. 5 tons don't have the space constraint difficulty that the m35's do for this.
2. S cam conversion like M1 did.
3. Install m939 series airbrakes...
Yep I used that same one. Removed a quick disconnect and plumbed in the hose for the air ride seat.
Got back into town today so will get started on stuff hopefully this weekend
Just realized I hadn't posted up the pic from loading the bed haha.
Then about a week later moved a deuce cab out of a friends pickup into his m35a2 bed. Tested out using the crane travel leg as a spreader bar and it worked well. Think a few minor mods and it will work even better, making...
When you go to install those u joints put a little bit of anti-seize on the outside of those caps. Will help alot when it comes time to replace them. Replacing those on service calls has taken me anywhere from 10 minutes to 3 hours depending on how stuck they are in the yokes.
Wouldn't put paint inside the reservoir, eventually will flake off and plug things up.
The 5 tons don't have the limited space problem around the master cylinder like the m35's do. So a different master cylinder for another truck is easier to find. Check with some of the local heavy truck...
What about setting the bed directly on the frame? From the side pic that would lower it to where the top of the bed would be about even with the bottom of the windows (fits the truck lines better in my opinion)
Power, AC, quieter, getting spoiled rotten hahaha.
Pics of everything related to the bed would be great. In particular (for me) the outriggers and the tow bar.
Only regularly economical alternative is the T138 from the older m39 and m809 series 5 tons. Stronger, but you now lose the overdrive ratio so with 16x20 tires top speed just below redline is now 55mph, 2000rpm cruise at 50mph. On 11x20"s it drops to 40mph cruising speed.
It's interesting that...

The T1138 housing is the known weak link. Was discovered early on in the M939's career while active duty (hence all the warning plates, MWO's, stated in the driver training...
Wait until warm weather to run that fuel mix. Gas engine will run on some diesel fuel just smokes alot and is under powered. Dilute it with more gas.
Have an idea for the spreader bar mod to the travel leg. Use a longer pin through the holes on the inner leg as a 'stop' for the chain, so no...
Had a chance to test out a spreader bar idea today. Using one of the travel legs for the boom, 2 shackles, and my 4 chain legs lifting setup. Worked well for a lightweight lift. With a couple mods to the bar allowing for the short chains to be closer to vertical will help for heavier lifts.
Correction .57 OD ratio between the T1138 and spicer 6453. Couple people on here running that setup already with great results on 11x20 tires, Opcom was the first that I know of. Figuring 42" tall tires that's 1900rpm at 65mph so right above the sweet spot with those tires. 53"s would be lugging...
Your right foot will be the biggest factor. In my m816 usually get 6-6.5mpg with a mix of city and highway at 55mph (2000rpm on 395's). Best I've gotten was 7mpg on a trip at roughly 50mph (1900rpm).
Stock exhaust, donaldson intake snorkle, and the smaller diameter air filter from those...
Which 5 speed manual are you calling normal simp? The 5 speed direct drive that only came in the m39 and m39a2 series, or the 5 speed overdrive 6453 that came in everything else? 6453 has a .78 5th gear. Combined with the .73 of the T1138 it's about a .56 OD ratio, faster than the setup in your...
Although I'd love to take credit for the original cover setup using the wood/tarp, that was Valence. My setup using a m36 cover to make a bimini top with awning isn't complete yet.
For idle mine is at 600-650rpm, nice and smooth.
Getting a little bit of work done on the wrecker. The hose that runs from the valve bank to the winch in plumbing decided to start failing when the dump bed was removed from the chassis (has alot of scrap in it, heaviest lifting it's had to do probably).
Drained the tank yesterday and found...
