Over the past year building the m51a2 remains into a trailer if it didn't sell was the plan. However I only have room for 1 trailer, 1 mil vehicle, and it keeps the costs down. The M118 trailer will play a big part in this along with the wrecker.
The plan is for 1 truck/trailer with multiple...
Heave ho. Front axle remains removed and tossed into the dump bed, and with alot more work than planned the dump bed/subframe is off the chassis. One of the other hoses on the crane decided to start leaking as well.
Guy picked up the 395's today, backed out of buying the m51a2 remains though which sucks but creates a few opportunities. Warning to any purists reading this thread, might want to turn away for a bit. There will be alot of trigger happy use of a torch on the m51a2 soon. Dump bed/subframe won't...
Yea I'm not buying most new (can't afford that haha) unless I go with one of the Chinese manufacturers which wear faster but I'm not driving nearly as much as a over the road commercial truck. Will be looking for some decent used ones, retreads, or the Chinese brands for on/offroad use.
Pulled...
Poor wrecker is most likely going to spend the winter sitting there waiting for tires. the worn out dog bones didn't like that incident and look like the lower 4 are about ready to fail so will be replacing them. so the list of repairs/mods to the wrecker over the winter/fall:
Lower 4 dog...
As stated earlier it's a different model. T1138 in the m939 series, T138 in the m39 and m809 series.
T138 is physically bigger with a stronger housing. Haven't torn one down next to a T1138 but wouldn't be surprised if the internals are a bit beefier as well.
The 10:1 reverse gear in the m939...
Never found a shop that will use those hammer on weights with the 395's and bigger. However you balance them helps. I've had the coolant work great in multiple sets of tires so that's what I stick with.
Tires of this size ain't balanced by the traditional clamp on/stick on weights like a regular car and 1 ton truck. They will either use centramatics or open up the tire/wheel and toss in some material (coolant, sand, powder, airsoft BB's, etc).
If your tires have the tar in them from the...
Caging the brakes. Insert the T shaped head of that bolt into the spring brake chamber, rotate it clockwise until it catches. Then thread on the nut/washer and use a wrench to pull it up tight.
Costs a case of beer for me to open up the TM's for others and I do collect that haha.
Problem with the oil bath plan is the inner seal by the brakes, it's not designed to keep oil in, just to keep crap out.

Time to warm up them vocal cords. Besides the a2 all hub bearings are supposed to be greased.

Aint the a1's the same hubs as the older m939, m809, and m54's? If they are then both bearings on all axle hubs are greased, not oil bath. And there is an outer seal that goes between the outer bearing/inner hub nut.
The big picture point I'm trying to convey is that the 6bt ain't the best option in all aspects as you believe. Not as fuel efficient and more difficult to swap in. Just because a 12 valve is best in your opinion doesn't mean it's the best for everyone.

These same engines you're saying are too small for a pickup are used in medium duty vehicles. Main vehicles that used the 4bt and now 2.8 ISF? Box trucks like Fedex and UPS, which are a heavier weight class than these CUCV's.
Ain't arguing that a 12 valve is a bad choice for these pickups, I've swapped one into my old 87 chevy 1 ton crew cab. Nor is the Cummins 6bt the best engine ever for a swap, might as well go to a sleeved engine with a stronger bottom end such as the DT360 or step up a little in size to the...
