Active Duty & Reserve SS Member Deployment Status

Do we retirees count? I did 28 years, 10 months, and 21 days in the Air Force with "deployments" to Germany (twice), England, Turkey, and Korea. During those "deployments," I also had TDY visits to France, Italy, Greece, Spain, Libya, and Morocco. For the last 21 years, I have been a...

    M 880 Facts

I was assigned to a TAC unit at Shaw AFB, SC in 1979/1980 when we had to swap our M37s for M880s. We hated the M880! If any vehicle ever needed power steering, that was the one, and it didn't have it! They were so bad that we'd rather take a deuce to base supply to pick up a case of toilet...

    New to the family!

Not so. The AF was never really fond of canvas tops, so most of our M-series vehicles came with factory hard tops.

    Teletype AN/PGC-1

That particular model was introduced in the waning years of WWII and was commonly used by all branches of the armed forces during the Korean war. I was an Air Force TTY operator for nearly 30 years and we had completely phased those out by the end of the Viet Nam war in favor of the more...

    New guy from Illinois

They can go on base. It's not a problem. All they have to do is stop at the gate and get a temporary vehicle permit from the cops at the gate. They will also tell him the most direct route from the gate to the pickup point. If he doesn't seem to understand the directions, they might even...

1009 roll over... is it done??

Snow bit him in the butt, didn't it? As has been said, it is fixable. Any competent body shop should be able to do it. Also as has been said, it would be cheaper to transfer everything to a new tub but that "just wouldn't be the same," would it? Dang shame that had to happen. :(

    Keywords

That sounds like the "Voice of Experience" if I ever heard it! :)

    Got my deuce :)

Wow! I'm sure glad I was nowhere nearby when all this was going on! With as little experience as you appear to have with driving vehicles with manual transmissions and steering, a "drive-away" recovery was perhaps not the best thing you could have done. A deuce is not the best vehicle in...

Fined for running WMO (not me)

Okay...when did they change colors? I used to operate a service station with my brother, and the diesel was undyed (clear). Untaxed agricultural diesel was dyed green. Gasoline was dyed red. When they introduced unleaded gas, it was clear and the red leaded gas gradually faded away. I guess...

    Upstate South Carolina OD Yard

Yeah! Me, too! Musta been driving on instruments each time, I guess.

    Radio Shelter for my M37

Love the switchboard pics! I spent many an "enjoyable" hour handling calls on one of those. :)

    Leg room

I'm 6' 10" tall and 285 lbs. I used to drive M151s in the service and managed to do it okay. I was about 40 pounds thinner then, but my legs were just as long as they are now. My biggest problem was my trying to keep my size 16 combat boots from getting tangled up with each other.

    1938 Ford Staff Car?

The paint appears to be the original 1938 civvy color, but that's always subject to change, isn't it? I think it would make a great staff car. Don't make the same mistake the guys did with the '41 Ford in the video, though. The star goes on the front door, not the rear. ;)

    Too fat to fit

I know where you're coming from! I was on HUGE doses of Prednisone for 8 years because of my myasthenia gravis. Some of the less desirable side-effects of that drug are weight gain, cataracts, type 2 diabetes, and asthma, all of which have managed to find me! I ballooned up to 315 pounds...

Looking at the M35 in a different way

As a former Scout leader (both American and English), I know how great it is when you can capture their attention with a "teaching moment." I'm glad to see that your truck became an educational tool. :D

    My Big Ride

Definately a nice ride!! I could see myself wheeling something like that down the highway. :)

    Correct M37 Engine Color???

The Air Force tech order specifies that when it's necessary to repaint an engine (i.e. after rebuild or major overhaul) it is to be painted gray. Therefore, if you have an AF truck, the engine should be either original Chrysler silver or gray. (Ford tractor gray is the closest commercially...

    Need electrical help!

Hi, and welcome to the forum! You are NOT the only girl here, either. There are a couple of wives and girlfriends who come to mind in addition to a couple of single girls who own their own trucks. When it comes to posting to the forum, Doghead's wife is probably the most active of the ladies...

Motor City Motors - another Deuce on TV

I fully agree! It looks like it's shaping up to be a 4-wheel version of the Orange City Choppers free-for-all. Who needs that kind of "drama?" Thank goodness my TV has more than one channel!

Knowing what an M-1008 or 9 is

Quite possibly. I retired from the Air Force in late 1989, and had never seen a CUCV at that time. We had M880 Dodges, which we called "peesas" (as in "peesa sh!t") and CJ7 Jeeps (being studied as replacements for our M151 Mutts), which for some strange reason we called "Jeeps." I still...
