If you go into a purchase thinking that the average shade tree mechanic can work on this truck, this is not the vehicle for you.
Performing maintenance on an FMTV is no more difficult than working on a newer class 8 over the road truck tractor. You need the proper tools and this means...
Are you sure that GL will stack them upside down for you?
You'll play heck aligning them up using the bow pockets.
Save all the trouble and drama and just place three 4x4"s across the bed and bind the trailers together. Check them after bouncing the rig around before leaving the base, then...
A1's don't have brakes or a provision on the frame for them. The frame is bare with just the lunette in place.
The a3 uses a different set of fenders since the wheels were moved further outboard to clear the beadlock tires and wheels. Also the a3 uses a raised center axle. And finally the a3...
Plain old Red Devil glass cutter. It's only a couple of bucks to purchase one..
To cut safety laminated glass, as stated in an earlier post, score both sides, strike one side to start the crack, but at this piont you need some lighter fluid to pour into the crack, light it on fire, this will...
Dot 3 brake fluid while damaging to most paints won't even touch fully cured CARC paint.
CARC has to survive exposure to DS2 decontamination fluid which will peel almost any paint with the exception of cured Polyurethane.
CARC sanding residue is no more dangerous that any other polyurethane...
It could be that new vehicles in the system are going on a 12 year replacement cycle.
The two M105a3 trailers that I purchased last year were 1997 model year trailers.
I have a line on a M1084 FMTV right now that I was told would be sold this year.
Most of the bent frames I've seen on M101/M116 trailers have been on the A1 or older A2 versions.
I have a M116a3 and a M101a3 and both are very beefy. The a3 version was up-rated to 1 ton instead of 3/4 of the a1 and a2 versions.
If you don't keep the bolts in the front of the bed to frame...
I edited my post with the corrected addition of the M105 data plate.
With the load distributed directly over the bed, the weights should be within the load limits listed on the data plate.
Now for another item. I don't fully believe the weight on lunette listed on any of the data plates. I...
I just went outside and took a photo of the M105 data plate. Look at empty weight on lunette and then weight with full load.
The weight listed empty on lunette is 300 lbs and loaded as 445lbs.
This will explain better than I can.
Quite do able (short distances) with a heavy duty 3/4 ton pick-up truck or greater. The tonge weight will not be doubled as long as the load is leveled.
Braking is another question.
The M105 trailer weighs 2750 lbs, below the requirment that most states mandate for brakess being required...
There is no lead chromate in CARC paint. The specification has a requirement that this product shall not contain lead and is a test that I have to perform for compliance testing from time to time.
Back when the military changed over from enamel to CARC, the first primer system Mil-P-52192 (for...
Last year before the Aberdeen show I asked my PPG rep about the avaiibility of their CARC coatings as I presently use Hentzen and Sherwin Williams for my CARC suppliers.
PPG does not manufacture CARC but has material repackaged made by NCP Coatings.
I can call my rep Bill again Friday...
Get someone to catch you as here is a link to some brand new tires that will fit the bill. Only problem is that they will probably cost you as much or more than you paid for the truck.

I can perform the micro hardness of the intact bolt as well as the broken one.
At issue is that the numbers would be meaningless if both bolts turn out to be the same hardness.
What is needed is a new bolt that has not been used for comparatory purposes.
The Mil-Dtl-53039 single component CARC is very easy to work with. It dries fast and you can save any leftover paint for later use.
If you go with the single componen version make sure to use some type of shielding gas (argon or nitrogen) to blanket the un-used portion or it will start...
Chuck,
I have to wait until I go back to work on Tuesday, but I have the MSDS sheets for both Hentzen and Sherwin Williams Mil-Dtl-64159 CARC.
The two most common isocyanides are TDI (toluene diisocyanate) and HDI (hexamethylene diisocyanate). Both of these products are a liquid not a gas...
You can try re-torqueing the head gaskets but probably won't make any difference.
If it were mine, I'd probably get a couple of cans of ceramic engine seal, pour it into the radiator and run the truck.
Barrs Leak only works for a while then needs to be re-newed with additional sealer.
I looked around a little bit to see what articles were in public domain about M939 series trucks and braking issues.
Per the article posted on Global Security website the retrofit to ABS brakes aslo included the replacement of the NDCC tires as they bore most of the responsibility for loss on...
While I have never driven a M939 series truck, I was however unfortunately lucky enough to have driven some of the first ABS equipped OTR trucks. This would have dated back to the late 1970’s or early 1980’s. Back then, they were referred to as 121 brakes, for the Federal vehicle code FMVSS-121...
