Rookie here! Purchased a Hmmwv Jan 2, 2020

I love this photo. I feel that our WW II forefathers would look at the HMMWV and say "You took a Cadillac to war?"

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Wow, that's 15 years of slumber.

What have you done to your HMMWV today/lately

Pouring rain all day today, so I brought the doors inside and re-stitched the canvas to the zippers and windows while watching TV. Viola! Functional doors. The windows are clear and the canvas (vinyl) isn't rotted, so it was worth 4 hours of my time. I figure the stitching will hold 6-12...

    Coolant/heater issues?

Here's a little update- The heater core was not leaking or blasting steam. I found an enormous, abandoned mud-dauber nest in the passenger side duct. When you turn on the blower, the squirrel cage fan would chew on it, sending a blast of fine dust out of the dash register. Then, the flow of...

Interested in buying a 90 6.2 Hmmv with 59,000 miles. New guy here!

Nah, private sale. I suspect it was recently auctioned and changed hands quickly but I'm not positive. Just a hunch based on stuff on the truck. Keep an eye on the classifieds here. One will pop up for around 10k. Edit: Ha! I found the original auction page for mine...

    M998 2-man filler panels

Searched through the manuals, and searched the archives here, with little luck. In the 2-man config, there are 2 types of "filler panels" that I've seen in place of rear doors. There's a solid panel, and a panel where the lower 1/3 of the panel is hinged and held shut with 2 rubber holddowns on...

Wrecker Owners, Stand up and be Recognized!

I'm glad this thread was started. Yes! Wrecker owners, please stand up and be counted so that when I break down in my M813, I may call upon you for mercy and a tow home! 😟

Interested in buying a 90 6.2 Hmmv with 59,000 miles. New guy here!

I'd reject that truck based on the color alone. I just bought a base M998 in 2-man configuration for $8k and drove it home, 82 miles. Sure, I'll have to give it a thorough going-over myself, but for an additional $2k for total fluids flush, general maintenance, new seats and new canvas...

    CARNAC's Historical VIN INFO Thread

That's ok. I appreciate your effort. The record keeping is a massive undertaking. In my case, I've actually been able to build a timeline from approximately May, 2000 until February 2011 when it was sold at auction by reading through all the unit markings on the truck. It might be cool to do...

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Yeah, but it's time to stop playing with BII and "accoutrements" and start doing real work. I've been threatening to do a coolant flush and all the belts and hoses for 6 months. Then the transfer case crapped out so I replaced it. Then I re-prioritized inspecting/servicing the steering axle...

    Coolant/heater issues?

Right. In my post #6 above, I did say that I would replace all fluids. I did catch in the -10 that power steering was ATF fluid. That was important because the power steering needed a little top off for the trip home. I own an old 5-ton, so I'm aware of the diesel coolant additive but I'll be...

    CARNAC's Historical VIN INFO Thread

This is pretty amazing. I found my truck. I'm not seeing a UIC column in these files, though. Am I doing something wrong?

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Here's what my truck looks like with a cover. Not bad. Played "tire Tetris" to get an equally worn set of tires with minimal checking on the truck. It does ride better. Even my wife says so.

    Coolant/heater issues?

@Coug I did squeeze the upper hose and got some coolant to burp into the tank but I felt that there should be more. I agree that the thermostat might be gunked up. I'll perform a coolant flush and go from there. Obviously, the first steps in new ownership should be a total fluid purge and...

    Coolant/heater issues?

Right-O. Seems odd that the truck would run that hot off a 50F degree day... or is it? I was pushing it pretty good. I guess this means the tempo guage is accurate.

    Coolant/heater issues?

Ok, I drove a plain, 2002 M998 home some 82 miles today. Yay, me. I have downloaded what I think are the right manuals and I am reading them, but help me understand a few things: Item 1. There is a statement in one of the manuals that says: Does this only apply to ambulances or maybe fuel...

What have you done to your HMMWV today/lately

We got 're home! Engine never skipped a beat. Brakes are perfect. A few minor electrical gremlins. Wife is thrilled.

Towing weight equation- Do I need trailer brakes?

That's fantastic. I'm not a fan of cutting into the military harness. They're flakey enough on their own.

    Artisan's M916

It should be in a museum! 😉

Towing weight equation- Do I need trailer brakes?

I don't think it has any of those brake upgrades. The only MWO tag was for the PRC radio setup.
