I recently worked with a friend here in California and when we opened up the control box we found the cheap ChiCom relay they used for the glow plug circuit had fried. Checking online we found them for $1.87. What does that tell you about the quality of the relay? Panasonic makes an identical...
There's an excellent flow chart in the TMs for troubleshooting overheating problems you might want to look at and a couple of good videos on You Tube.
Something I didn't see mentioned here is if the thermostat is stuck open or has been removed the coolant can actually flow too fast and won't...
Just head over to your local chevy dealer and order a new one. That part hasn't changed for 30 years.
Gasket mounting plate to block: FEL-PRO 5182
Fuel pump: Spectra Premium SP1143MP
Pushrod: Carter PR4 or Dorman 03875
In my HMMWV I've been running an antenna coax with a BNC connector that fits well into the recessed connectors on todays current radios. The connector on the left is what I'm looking for compared to a standard BNC connector on the right. The longer rotating barrel makes this style much easier...
Corrosion or dirty contacts are resistive and yes, they increase their resistance when they get hot. One cardinal rule with electronics and wiring is that connections need to be clean and tight. It doesn't hurt to coat them with anti-oxidant grease to help exclude moisture from getting to the...
The current shunt is an extremely low value resistor designed to generate a signal in the millivolt range so it's really not a current limiter at all. Unless you have badly corroded high resistance contacts you should never see much more than a volt or two across it. It's sole purpose is to...
I love Tobash's comment about reliable and strong. That must be the reasoning behind the government needing 100 and buying 1000. Although I guess they can be reliable when you have an unlimited number of mechanics maintaining them and the US taxpayers paying for the parts. LOL Kind of...
It's a 24v Southcom aircraft intercom that I modified into the chassis you see there to work with the radios. The HMMWV is so noisey that regular communications doesn't work on the road. The same intercom unit is made by Southcom, Avcom and a couple others and works well in military vehicles...
The HMMWV is notoriously loud inside and even with the LS-671 speaker you can barely understand what's being said. It works better as an annunciator to let you know someone is calling you. Recently I switched to a really comfortable General Dynamics single earpiece headset I bought off of Ebay...
I'm now working on my 4th SF-3512 antenna base on my M996A1 HMMWV ambulance. The coax between the base N connector and the BMA connector to the mast keeps opening up. I've spoken to Shakespeare about this and they were more than willing to work with me on the problem. Great people! I think...
You can go with the older VRC-12 radios like the RT-246 or RT-524, the newer radios like any of the SINCGARS variants, or the very latest Harris radios like the PRC-117F. It all depends on what your willing to spend on a radio. They will all be correct for use in a HMMWV.
Something else to...
I can't stress enough that you need to download and learn how to use the technical manuals. They're free to download here on the Steel Soldiers site. Here's what's supposed to be in the fuel filter right out of the -24P manual:
Years back when I got my truck and parts were scarce I installed this switch to address my fan problems. In the down position it's in normal automatic mode. The middle position the fan is always on and in the top position the fan is always off. I've done several of these switches for friends...
