It almost looks like they took an existing chassis (other manufacturer) and scabbed on a fiberglass mock up of a hood. The wheels and all drive components were hidden by camo netting. Weird.
I finally got underneath to check these bolts today. Very interesting, they are installed backwards and all I’m seeing is threads. The hex head is not accessible. Either someone put them in backwards or this is a TM revision to keep them from loosening.
I don’t know exactly, but from watching my rear suspension move under various conditions I would say it is some sort of mount that allows the two axles to articulate in different directions so the springs don’t bind up the movement. They seem to be hard rubber. I’m sure there’s some sort of...
Russ, I have been in a similar place as you. Often finding info in the TM’s is harder than fixing the problem. I’ve been told to go read the TM more than once. However, part of the attraction to the SS community is the camaraderie and friendships that develop. I know many members have answered...
You can do it fine, just upgrade your wheels in the process. You’ll have radial tires and heavier duty wheels.
See a little taste of what they have coming!!!

There are two things I would consider with tires: driveability and safety
For driveability bias tires are horrible if you plan to drive many (any) on-road miles.
Safety would be more related to the condition of he tires. As you stated, the tread is good. However old tires can be dry rotted...
Ok Coffey. This is the tire wrap up for you. I now have 6 on the ground and a spare all mounted up with bead locks and such. These last three kicked my backside physically.
That is the last one being dismounted for the spare and here are the other 6.
On to the next project.
I know! I know... A few things get in the way timewise... work, wife’s knee surgery yesterday, teenage kids, work, church, clearing land for pending septic system repairs, work... did I mention work? auaLOL. I need to take vacation to stay home and tinker with the truck!
I was able to get four MV/T tires installed on the truck tonight.
I still have 3 more MV/T’s to mount on wheels. I will be taking the truck Sat back to a friend’s shop to remove the old tires and mount the new ones. At the end of the day, I’ll have all 7 including the spare!
That would be an adventure. If you decide to drive, make sure you take supplies and tools. There is a good thread here somewhere with lists of items folks recommend carrying along.
I would also get as much intel on the truck as possible prior. As in operational status of brakes, trans, lights...
We like pictures! Keep them coming. That looks like a nice truck. The new hitch looks pretty beefy.
It looks like those are the older bias tires and early wheels. You’ll probably want to upgrade wheels and tires. There’s a guy in east TN that has a bunch of used 37’s out of Ft Campbell. They...
I rebuilt one of mine as detailed in the first linked thread above. Cost was about $250 which included the shock-end bushings. PowerPacker is the manufacturer. I sourced parts from a PP dealer called Ohio Hydraulic. Part numbers and schematics are posted in my thread.
I’m going to add that upgrading the air dryer keeps the inside of the air brake system cleaner with less corrosion. This may not be the whole problem, but certainly can be a contributing factor.
