Considering deuces are costing almost as much as 900 series 5-tons you are setting yourself up for a lot of work. Unless you have unparalleled fab skill and anal attention to detail you might be opening yourself up to a big liability if you were ever in an accident. A lot of people are one...
Buying an MV for fuel mileage is like eating chocolate cake to lose weight. A vehicle with the aerodynamics of a concrete block is never going to be a fuel sipper. My O-ring puckers up every time I pump fuel into the M927 but dayum she looks good going down the road.
You will still have to apply to GL for the SF-97 (and pay for it). This is where you may have problems. GL will not issue the SF-97 to anyone but the original buyer. You cannot transfer the SF-97 itself to another person even though it looks like a title (been there, done that). You have to...
Price depends on condition. Fire department trucks can be gems or junk depending on how they were taken care of and if they were heavily modified (hacked to pieces).
If it is a good runner and in fairly original shape I'd say it's worth at least three grand. I'd lowball them since you can always...
Figure 6 MPG (depending on speed) and anything better is gravy. With the super singles you can bust 65 MPH but you'll suck fuel. My M927A gets optimum mileage at around 56-58 MPH which is about 1900 RPM.
I scrapped out a deuce tanker (it was rusted to crap) and sold the stainless steel tank (I cleaned all the other metal off it) for over 600 bucks. If it is an M49 there are a lot of parts that can be salvaged and sold. If it is in good shape I wouldn't scrap it. Tankers are not all that common.
I can't wait to see patracy's truck at the GA Rally. Of course if Soni loaded the FEMMT up on the M920 and drove out it would be the ultimate one upmanship.
A couple of years ago several LEO's and the local Drug Task Force were attempting to serve a warrant on a tweaker and his girlfriend. The designated a**hole stepped out on the porch and opened fire with an AK and killed two deputies. I don't know if having one of these vehicles would have helped...
There is a proposed wind energy project in my county and I have had a couple of meetings with company officials (interviewing for a Public Relations job). Since the proposed site is up on a high ridge with few improved roads it is going to be a challenge to get the turbines up there. This...
Have you taken the truck to a big rig tire shop and had it checked out?
If you decide to replace them and no one else closer chimes in you can check out http://local.yahoo.com/info-14824534-gensco-aircraft-tire-anniston
They use to have a big selection of military tires, some mounted and...
I have an M275 with the non-turbo engine. I've pulled several trailers back from Redstone with it and there are a couple of hills between there and the farm. The engine gets hot fast in a hard pull and if you don't know how to drive it you will melt it down. On flat land it runs just as good as...
Use a duel tank set up with a pump to transfer fuel from the aux tank to the primary. That way you don't have to do a lot of plumbing. Some of the older 5 tons had a similar setup. That way you can use a stock deuce tank and brackets and just mount it on the drivers side of the truck.
