Sounds like mine when I got it started first time. I used Seafoam to clean the carb and get the carbon build up out. Worked great! Very little smoke these days and quick starts. The VW starter is a great improvement also....
I remember some of the cold kits for trucks had front covers for the radiator with flaps to open a small port for air. Some guys put a piece of cardboard to cover the radiator. Thoughts?
I wish I would have taken some pics of the hundreds of M1009s when they were sitting at the DRMO here back in the 90s. The lot was so full they were stacking them on top of each other. Some were cannibalized for parts some still had the plastic covers on the seats. Some had yellow and red...
Ive run my equipment (two way radios) off the front battery for 16 years. Other than normal battery replacements its worked fine. Finally rebuilt the drivers side alternator this year to get rid of a RF whine, but it was always worked A-OK. YMMV
"Rear main seals leak when the engine is running also. That analogy is poor. I don't think the oil sets in the pan that deep that the rear main would leak when parked. And if the throttle shaft seals are leaking that bad the driver will have other problems also. Hard starting and a burning eye...
If you notice the leak while the engine is running its most likely the IP pump seals. The O rings on the IP accelerator shaft dry out (especially if the truck sat) they leak down the center gallery the out the back of the engine when its running.
My error...Ive been working on three different vehicles this week...diagram is correct
The sensor is located behind the filter base. It cracks loose and allows air to enter the system
You might see fuel leaking from the rear of the case
Fuel is drawn up from the tank through the filter then to the lift pump to the IP pump and then injectors. The -20 manual can help you with the trouble shooting process and show diagrams
If it still has the old stanadyne box filter It might be the mounting base. Theres a lot of documentation on this site about the sensor on the back side of the base cracking open and allowing air into the fuel system....
I replaced mine with a spin on filter No more problems!
CUVUs tend to be a RF black hole... bad reception all around. I think some of it is getting a good antenna ground through the CARC. I installed several different antennas for my good time radio. Finally installed a better radio with a fender mount antenna, works great!
