    Clearing up NO STARTS

Just unpacked my load tester. As I was doing so I spotted the Chinese starter in my garage. Having made a few statements about suspecting the wiring circuits rather than failing parts, so I tested the starter on the bench. It worked?!?! So I ran extensions to the starter using the purple starter...

    Clearing up NO STARTS

I know it is not poor quality components causing all these NO STARTS and hosed starters and solenoids. There is a fault, a weak link, somewhere in this circuit's harness that is causing us these reoccurring problems. I sure wanna nail this down!

    Clearing up NO STARTS

warthog, OK, I have been looking over the first solenoid that came on the Chinese Gear Reduction starter. I have not figured out how to open it yet- I was thinking about a dremel and a cutting wheel. Just cutting through the metal part beyond the crimps. I still don't know the answer to my...

    Clearing up NO STARTS

Can these contacts (I assume you are talking about the ones on the starter solenoid) be cleaned externally, or are they shot and need to be replaced, as the Gear Reduction starters have sealed solenoids?

    Clearing up NO STARTS

rickf: ... you may be onto something here with this grounding business. I have been looking at the diagram below- on loan from Warthog. The grounding strap and the purple w/white wire are the common element- or at least one common element. It may be that the strap is no longer grounding as it...

    Clearing up NO STARTS

By the way I am getting 24 volts to the starter solenoid when I turn the key to START. According to Step 4 in the troubleshooting section: I should replace the starter if I get voltage? Huh? Why?

    Clearing up NO STARTS

Doghead, I am not trying to clutter the boards, I just didn't want to create a saga. IT seemed to be all fixed, so I thought a NEW THREAD for this continuous burned-up solenoid. If you want to move this to the tail-end on another thread of mine, I am OK with that- Really, I am not trying to...

    Clearing up NO STARTS

If you have been following any of my threads lately then you may remember I recently replaced the Ebay (chinese) starter with a Wilson Starter. That went well and everything was jake. I felt so good about the prospects of not having to replace one in the field anytime soon , that I went out and...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

Changed out my #2 alt. A Wilson I ordered from O'reily. I picked -up a new alt pigtail also. It was RED/WHITE instead of RED/BLACK. After tinning, soldering and heat-shrinking it together, I used a Sharpie to change the white wire to Black- I get confused otherwise later down the road. Cleaned...

How do you test the starter solenoid?

lindyp38, I had a direct Drive- could have been the wrong one. It petered out and I replaced it with a chi-nee model from eBay. It lasted 7 months. A recent thread of my detailed this matter. I will say that in the few days since I have had my new Gear Reduction starter in, I have been feeling...

Does this mean the starter has an Isolated ground?

While I am at it... I notice this condenser- "capacitor" per the TM, bolted to the rear of the Passenger side ALT. (bottom of the picture). Could this be to limit radio interference? My radio always has static. If not, what is it for and where can I get another one to replace it? P/N?

Does this mean the starter has an Isolated ground?

Doghead, thanks for the reply. I'm on it. As for posting separately, I thought about this after I posted and went back to my last thread and revised my last post. Sorry, I am trying to keep them limited so that one can follow the thread to resolution and not miss something- it just started to...

Does this mean the starter has an Isolated ground?

Just bought this Wilson alternator (WIL 90014277) per member's help. Had a evil thought as I was fixing to put it in. Some threads I have read warn that some of these alts were delivered with the oversight of forgetting to isolate the ground. I did not want to fry anything, and since the very...

Does this mean the starter has an Isolated ground?

Rebuid an alt with isolated ground My #2 alt lamp is on steady as of this morning. I can't seem to find one on the shelf. Am I looking too hard? I am sort of in a hurry cause the hunting season opener is here. Where can I find one on the shelf- I'd take it to a rebuilder; but the one I normally...

    so many starters

Firefox: Good catch. In an earlier thread of mine (much earlier) I had a similar problem. I Removed my Delco DD starter (turned out to be a 12volt model). I put a chinese junk model in at that time (gear reduc), also bought the correct bracket from the dealer at that time- so it was already in...

    so many starters

Resolved: I ordered a Wilson Gear Reduction MT28 to replace the Chinese one from ebay. I remember ordering the one off the bay and thinking I'd probably be better off replacing it with an American new OR quality American rebuilt; but the auction looked good and my thrify side said: "how bad can...

    Soft Top Blazer

I have been thinking of a way to cut down my Cargo Cover for my M1008 to fit my blazer. I would have to add a clear window, I suppose to maintain a rearview; but It does look cool IMHO. Cut the poles down, then girdle cut the top and drop it down over the bottom portion of the cover about six...

    so many starters

thanks for the replies so far; but I am still after the answer to my question: what part goes out on the starter?
